Default Hi I'm New

Hi I have been reading post last night and today and just now registered. I have not had any surgery yet I went in earlier this month to my Endocrine Doctor and a Gastrointeroligist and My Endocrine doctor said that Weight Loss Surgery might be the thing to help in dealing with my Diabetes. At first I was skeptical and afraid to do it. But reading on here and other websites and just learning what the whole process will be like. But I do still have questions like I love water can I still drink alot of it and how much can I drink of it I do know I can not drink anything while eating and thats okay but can I drink a sip If I need to get the food down. I also have all my teeth taken out and the dentures I have are not good at all and I do need new ones but I heard I have to really chew and chew foods when I get to the soft food stages and beyond. I also have diabetes like I said do others on the board that have diabetes shown any improvement. I am now on 2 types of insulin and take 4-5 shots of 100 units for Levimer and 30 units if Novilin R plus I am on meds of High Blood Pressure, Hypothyroidism and Diabetes Insipidus I also have Sleep Apenea and High Colestrial and yes I'm only 25 years old on April 1st Yay! I have times of uncontrollable craving and urges to eat and if I don't it makes me very mad and unhappy. And If I do eat I eat alot I go out of my way to get the food I want and I sneak foods that I know I should not have from other people. I am at my highest weight of 325 I have been up and down a bit in weight but usually it just goes up. I have been on a few diets but I can't seem to stick with them because of my cravings and I know I can improve with exercise I am very tired all the time and mostly stay on my computer all the time. I do have 2 dogs and I have resolved to walk them more and I found a nice water areboic class nearby that If I can convince my dad to buy a 3 or 6 month membership so he can us the weights at the gym I can do the Water Arebics and walk on their track and use the weight and cargo machines. I'm am on government assistance and I don't have a job right now so money is tight. I hope I can get Insurance to cover the surgery and If not I don't' know what to do If I don't get it. I hope with my weight record and medical records and that fact im so young and have all these medical problems that my insurance which is Access Plus PA Assistance will cover me. Any info and advice will be greatly appreciated. :-) I know this is a step in the right direction for me.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Welcome I'm so glad you found us. I have heard that people that are diabetic prior to surgery are able to cut back on meds and some even are able to come off of them completely after a huge weight loss. For water yes your allowed to drink lots of it and its recommened. However in the beginning you have to sip sip sip not gulp. And I was told no drinks for 1/2 hour before and after eating. Although if needed could have a few sips with a meal to get it down. Just remember this surgery is a tool, if you abuse it you can and will gain the weight back.
Good luck with everything, and I look forward to getting to know ya.

Welcome to the board, thank you for joining us.

I have only a few mins right now to post, but at a WLS workshop I attended a couple of weeks ago, the most recent data (in the US) for improvment of co-morbidities after surgery was shown, and for diabetes mellitus, with the bypass surgery, resolution (no meds needed) was approx 60%, and improvement over 20%, putting the total of patients with their diabetic condition much better at over 80%.

Anyway, a lot of what you have, is not always caused by obesity, but they are aggravated--made much worse-- with obesity, so being able to shed that weight should enable you to get off a lot of meds, and need only the minimum amount if any at all.

((((((HUGS)))))))May your journey go well.

Hi I am new too. I registered the other day but haven't posted anything prior to this. I am just getting started in the process of having wls. My doctor recommended it last fall. I have been dragging my feet a little trying to get my head ready for this. I am on insulin and have been for over 10 years and recently they added byetta to the mix. I need to lose about 150 lbs. Went to the weight loss seminar a couple of weeks ago. I have started the process of qualifying. Sending copy of medical records and have my appointment set with psychologist for next week. I too have several of the metabolic conditions associated with obesity. I have my first grandchild and want to be able to chase and play with him. A little apprehensive about the appt with psychologist, not sure what to expect.

Welcome to the board. I think you will find a lot of answers and help here. I know what you mean about craving. In the last 1 1/2 years I am either sleeping, eating or hungry. I was always able to keep weight down but not anymore. I can tell you that most surgeons require your hemoglobin A1C to be below 7 before they will do the WLS. I have gotten mine down from almost a 9 to 7.6. Everthing else is in order to have the surgery. just .6 points holding me back. You are a lot younger than me. I am 57. But I can tell you whatever you do you need to do it NOW! You have a whole life ahead of you and the only person holding you back is you. We are all here to help you. Don't GIVE UP!!! PLEASE! Stick with us and maybe together we can find answers for each other. God Bless!! Mattie

Default Hi I'm New

Hi,
I'm a newbie also. I am awaiting approval from OHIP for my surgery. I began my journey over a year ago and have been visiting renewed reflections website since then. I have been trying to keep a very positive attitude and stay focused, but at times impatience gets the better of me.
I am 58 years old and have been overweight from the time I was 11 years of age. My weight has reached 239 pounds and I have developed many health problems. All of your stories help keep me going and give me much support. Thanks to all of you and I hope to have good news in the near future.

Welcome to all of you, this is a great place to be. You will learn many things from our members and get lots of support. Everyone here is nice as can be.

MY name is Jeanne and I am pre-op also. Like Mattie I am trying to get my A1C below 7.0. Recently my doctor added Byetta and I doing very well with it. I am hoping after my next test I will be able to tell you my surgery date.
