| Newbie, too...looking for some advice
I've just started looking into doing a RNY. Have been doing some research online and was wondering if some of you with experience could answer a couple of questions for me. Let me get right to them:
1) I am curious as to whether or not the weight is more likely to come off in certain areas or if it comes off evenly? I hold most my weight in my thighs and stomach. Will the weight come off of the fattest areas first? Or will I be losing in places I don't necessarily want to lose from first...like my boobs!? LOL
2) I am definately a hormonal eater and my eating habits are significantly worse during 'that time of month.' I feel hunger all the time when aunt flo comes to visit. I had read somewhere that because the pouch bypasses much of the small intestines, the hormone (I believe it was called gherlin?) that experts *think* controls hunger is surpressed/turned off/or otherwise deactivated. Women out there that were PMS/PMDD overeaters...what has been your experience with control of eating or lackthereof after surgery?
3) Does bone structure play a role in determining what the goal weight should be post-surgery? Or is there some general formula that is used for all people?
4) Anyone know the statistics on how many people experience dumping syndrome? The WLS center that I talked to said that not everyone has it. They also said their experience is that only 50% of people lose and maintain post-surgery. I thought the statistic was more like 70%. Knowledge please?
5) Looking for a good, well experienced surgeon in Rochester Hills, MI area. Suggestions as to how to go about finding the right surgeon for me?
Thanks so much all!

Ok first for me it is coming off everywhere for me most noticeable is in my upper torso(boobs, shoulders, neck) my legs too.I work out also 5 ays a week. As far as dumping everyone is different for me I have problems with ground beef(I get really tired) but steak is fine. Funny you should mention hormonal eating as I was just thinking that today. I used to get bad cravings for chocolate/sweets but now nothing..it's great. as far as goal weight it is usually done by BMI..my goal is the high side of my BMI but I have talked with my surgeon that I will go more by how I feel rather than a number. Good luck in your journey. The worst part is the unknown and how YOUR body will react since everyone reacts differently...that is something that you can't get definate answers on and can be frustrating

1) I am curious as to whether or not the weight is more likely to come off in certain areas or if it comes off evenly? My weight initially was coming off faster in my chest area and shoulders and then the other areas, but lately the upper loss has slowed and started on bottom. My bra size is smaller, but my cup size has stayed the same..if that helps any. The ladies do sag more though...bummer. :-(
2) I am definately a hormonal eater and my eating habits are significantly worse during 'that time of month.' I feel hunger all the time when aunt flo comes to visit. I don't feel hunger anymore and really don't have any cravings during that time of the month either. I was a huge chocolate eater during this time.
3) Does bone structure play a role in determining what the goal weight should be post-surgery? Or is there some general formula that is used for all people? I just picked the higher range of my normal BMI, don't really know where I am going to end up. My doctor said he would liked to see me lose half my weight when he saw me the very first time and that was the last time a weight was brought up.
4) Anyone know the statistics on how many people experience dumping syndrome?
I am very careful about what I eat and haven't had a dumping experience so I can't say. I have upset my pouch by taking too big a bite or not chewing something well enough, but that is not the same thing. I just was in upper chest pain until the food fianlly passed on through.

in response to homonal eating. I too get that way. for me it is salt a big thing for me. typically, for me I just add a little salt to veggies. That seams to do that for me.
in response to bone structure... I actually have a goal weight higher than my "ideal weight" not because of bone structure, but because of my muscle mass. Last time I was weighed at the dietition's office they used a special scale that measures fat and muscle mass. I had 135 in lean muscle. That means that I will not get to 132 pounds, unless I lose muscle (which you don't want to do).
I have not seen any statistics on dumping. I think it is different from person to person. Out of two other people and myself who had surgery, two of us have experianced dumping. The food that causes dumping varries. For me it was breaded items, or items with sugar. For my friend it can be veggies. A food may cause dumping once, and then you are able to eat it...
I have found that if I do not chew well enough is when I am more likely to experiance dumping. I also now can notice the signs before dumping (almost like a pre-dumping) and know that it is time to stop eating, or to get up and walk around, or get air.
Post-surgery eating is a learning experiance... that is the best way I can explain it.

Well for me my weight loss has not been spread out evenly, I have lost from the top first and I'm having the hardest time losing the fat in my thighs and rear. I exercise regularly too. But I'm hopeful that one day I'll see some progress there.
I don't really have cravings during that time of month but then again I don't have my period that often anymore. But when I do I don't notice that I'm craving things.
I don't dump on sugar unfortunately so I just have to be real careful and eat what I know I'm supposed to and not what I want sometimes. There are some things that don't settle well in my pouch and causes me discomfort but it's not dumping.
Good luck to you as you research this process, it's the best thing that I've ever done for myself!

| 1) I am curious as to whether or not the weight is more likely to come off in certain areas or if it comes off evenly?
I am melting all over. Most of the change has been in my tummy, my thighs, and my face. I started working out, which i believe helps the legs even more. I think my problem area will be the upper arm... you know that cruel joke of gravity and my back fat! haha. but im going to start exercises targeted for those areas as well. im only a just a little over 5 weeks out. My hands are smaller, my arms, my shoulders, my face, my boobs are a little smaller but not drastic, stomach, thighs, legs, ankles, and feet. im pretty happy!
I am in the process right now. I am feeling a little bit hungry today. But its no thang. I realized last night i ate a good amount of food. Not like excessive to worry about stretching. It was over a good period of time, but i usually lose interest in eating once after like a half an hour of attempting to get the food down. But as i PMS, i ate my dinner slow for about an hour and a half. I know crazy. but i think the pms might have something to do with it. 3) Does bone structure play a role in determining what the goal weight should be post-surgery? Or is there some general formula that is used for all people?
Doc will go over that with you. 4) Anyone know the statistics on how many people experience dumping syndrome?
im pretty sure the statistic is higher than 50%. Either way, i havent experienced it. And honestly, if you just pay attention, read those labels, you should be fine. This surgery is all about being aware and making mindful and healthy decisions.
Don't get me wrong, i had pizza for dinner the other night. But it was made on a whole wheat wrap, was about 15 grams of protein all together, low fat, low sugar, low cal, and even low carb.
You can still have fun with food. Just gotta change the relationship up a bit.
