| Hypoglycemic after Gastric Bypass - Diet?
I had my second birthday (as I consider my Bypass Surgery) in December of 2007. I never had many issues as in intolerance to food, not even the ones most commonly reported after the surgery.
I did notice (as I first thought) an increased sensitivity to milk and certain milk products, but then noticed, that it had more to do with certain kinds of sugars. For example I felt sick after eating cereal with lactose free milk, however I was fine after eating toast with creme cheese or regular cheese in general. Things don't add up.
My symptoms are always the same. Stomach pain, cold sweats, nausea and extreme fatigue afterwards. I know now that that's also part of the dumping process.
Then about 6 months ago, I started to have headaches, felt lightheaded, felt like fainting, but those symptoms eased when I ate something sweet or crackers (for the most part). Long story short, my doc thinks it is Hypoglycemia (from the symptoms). Blood tests were done and my Glucose levels fasting are fine though. She suggested to change my diet to include complex carbs in small meals every few hours.
Now I did read up online, that Hypoglycemia can be a late after effect of gastric bypass surgery and suggests a low carb diet. This seems kind of contradicting to me.
Anyone has any experience or ideas / reports on what to do.
Thanks in advance !!!

I used to have reactive hypoglycemia. Follow the link from the Doc, get a book on the glycemic index and watch what you eat and log everything you react to so you know what to avoid. Read Labels, not just the nutritional info, but the contents, looking for sugar products. Be wary of fruit, sugar, milk, and alcohol, as well as all simple carbs. If you crash, don't have more sugar, have some nuts or peanutbutter. Sugar will make you feel better for a short time, then you will crash even lower than before and you really don't want that!
Some veg. have high sugar content, you might have to watch them for a while until things calm down like peas and carrots. Catsup and BBQ sauce are high in sugar. Pasta and rice, potatoes, all high glycemic index foods.

me too. Hypoglycemia. I am sick of being sick. Went thru lots of tests the last few weeks and man when it bottoms out it is bad. During the 6 hr glucose tolerence test the highest it got was 371 and lowest it got was 25. Dr has me going to a nutritionist for help. I can eat cheese but not anything sugar. When it gets really bad I use cheese or nuts. Hope this helps.

Everyone checking out postop hypoglycemia or dumping, please read the following thread, and consult your dr. Keep in mind, if it happens, it is best to get in both carbs and protein, not just carbs, to prevent a second hypoglycemic incident. Protein helps slow down the absorbtion of carbs so it won't peak quickly and get too high in too short a time, causing another rapid drop.
Also keep in mind, your reaction may not necessarily be the same as a diabetic patient-- hypoglycemia for diabetics is due to an *overdose* of medication, not the rapid rise of blood sugar followed by a rapid fall in the level which is what happens to a GBS patient--so, what works for diabetics may not work as well for a GBS patient.
If it happens often, then you may need to space out your meals differently from just 3 meals a day. This also is discussed in the thread I have linked in. Dumping and Hypoglycemia
