Red face Barbie Dolls

Hi, I'm Barb. Not quite a Barbie. My generation grew up with Barbie dolls and I was especially enamored with the dolls since they had the same name as me. How cruel it is to teach little girls that the ideal body was huge breasts, an impossible waist, and long, long, dimpleless legs.

I was a very active child and stayed slim, if not downright scrawny. But in my early teens the dimples in my thighs showed up, even though I was at my ideal weight - and so, the first diet. But nothing made the dimples go away. Remember using rolling pins to break up the fat cells and Saran wrap to melt the fat so it could be reabsorbed into the body?

Over the years I managed to keep the weight within a reasonable range until I hit my early 40's then suddenly I started craving food. Where did this voice in my head come from and why does it keep screaming "chocolate, Chocolate, CHOCOLATE", "cookie, Cookie, COOKIE"?

I've tried most of the diets, from sensible South Beach to silly Cabbage Soup. I've done Phen-Fen, Orlistat, and Meridia. I've joined gyms and lifted weights, ran around the track, swam, tread mill. I've tried aerobics, line dancing, circuit training. And I get SO MAD when someone tells me I'm just not trying hard enough!

Twice I lost 65 pounds, by taking Meridia, eating strict Atkins, and exercising, exercising, exercising. But eventually the voice came back and whispered "ice cream, Ice Cream, a big Hot Fudge Sundae with whipped cream and wet nuts - now!" and I would be lost again. Twice I regained the 65 pound, and, oh by the way, here's another 10 to go with it.

I have come to believe that obesity is a disease, just like alcoholism. It's not the same as being overweight. Overweight people can and do take off the excess with a sensible diet and exercise. Obese people can take it off too (with extreme effort) but there is an intense craving for food that is constantly at the forefront of their minds, making it nearly impossible to do anything else when the need to feed is upon us.

So here I am; taking the most drastic step I can to take this weight off for what I pray is the final time. I want to be able to walk without gasping, to reach my shoes, to choose to not wear pantyhose because I hate the flipping things and not because I can't get into them. To feel sexy when I'm naked in front of my husband.

Thank you all for being here. I've been lurking around for months now, reading your writings, hearing your cries, and craving your support. It's beautiful the way you support each other and I know I'm going to need your help as I go down this path. You've already inspired me. Thanks.

Here's where I'm at on my journey: I've got Federal BC/BS and it looks like they will cover the RNY. I'm a BMI of 39 with GERD and a peptic ulcer that we've been treating for a year so I really hope it's gone (endoscopy will tell). I've had the consult with the surgeon and he says I'm an excellent candidate. I saw the psychologist this past Monday and got her approval. I still need the endoscopy and the ultrasound of my gallbladder and then we need to schedule a date.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Welcome to the board, thank you for joining us.

Yes, it's rather frightening what a seemingly innocent toy can do, isn't it? And all those TV commercials, too, on food and those waif like girls promotoing them, when to stay there on these things is impossible. Really irresponsible, when you sit back and think.

Wishing the best for you, ((((((HUGS)))))) May your journey go well!

Default Hey There!

Hi Barb. My name is Michelle and I am also new to this site. My experience here has been wonderful!!! I am working on an appeal as we speak. I hear ya about the eating thing. My most frustrating thing about obesity is the feeling that I can never get my stomach full. Yesterday was a frustrating day......so what did I do? Had 2 huge pieces of chocolate cake with chocolate icing! Today's another day....I behaved. lol. Anyway, WELCOME.

Barb,

For one thing I love your name. And your absolutly right on the image. I did want to tell you I have called many a insurance company in the last 7 years for approval and the one you have it the absolute tops. Not only do they not give you no type of hassle, they pay wonderful. 90% of it will be covered. I didnt know if you knew that or not. Your very fortunate on that. Good luck with eveything. Im glad to have you around.

Well Barbie sound like you and I have a lot in common. I too have the Fedeal BC/BS. I have finished all the requirements just waiting on the surgeon's office to say they have confirmed my coverage. They told me once that happens, I should go in a couple of weeks.

So glad you are posting here. I look forward to getting to know you through this site and maybe we will go through this journey around the same time.
