Smile Newbie Looking For Guidence

Hi everyone! My name is Sarah and I'm a newbie! I had my Roux-en-Y gastric bypass November 23rd, and have lost 39 pounds so far. It feels great to have lost so much weight already, but i'm having a really hard time with depression. I almost feel as though I'm mourning the loss of food. Is that weird? I also have been feeling generally just sick for the past few weeks and I can't seem to shake it. I'm also really tired all the time. Are these things a normal part of recovery? On a more positive note, I'm very happy to be a part of a community of people who understand what I'm going through!

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Welcome! I believe what you're going through is normal and hopefully it will pass soon. I too felt sad and often felt I made the wrong decision. I'm just starting to feel like myself again and feel like I can get through this. I am not as experienced as other members but I think feeling tired may be from a lack of a certain nutrient. Usually from what I have heard you may be lacking protein. And I too felt I was mourning food. I know the others members will give you much better advice and they've been great on my journey. Just wanted you to know I've been there and it does get better. Hang in there and best wishes on your new journey.

I still mourn what I've left behind, as food has always been a comfort. On the other hand, I'm loving what I've lost from my behind! I think you're completely normal, the fatigue really su**s, and I at times get a little weepy for not good reason. Shock to your system, and it's like you've hit the reset button on your computer and everything is trying to do just that. Try and be patient with yourself and realize you're going to experience all sorts of nutso things in the next few months. Buckle up, sister!! You'll be in a skimpy swimsuit in time for summer!!

39 lbs! WOW! I had my surgery 5 days after you and ive lost 13 lbs to date. Great job! My hubby has the sleeve gastrectomy and really struggled with the emotional side of things. It lasted for about 3 weeks, and since then he's been better...now he doesnt even care. I havnt had the emotional struggle, I was expecting it, but it either hasnt hit me, or wont affect me( i have my fingers, toes and eyes crossed, lol)

I do get emotional though. I dont like feeling not like myself. Im still in pain and my activity level is still really limited. If I do too much one day (it doesnt feel like im doing too much when im doing it) the next day Im confined to a recliner and a heating pad on my sore incisions and back. Im thankful, but I also hate having to rely on people to do things for me. I still cant get out of bed without assistance, need help getting dressed, and cant even put on my own tennis shoes (cant bend much..still really hurts). Im really independant, so not being able to these things depresses and frustrates me. We will see how I feel once Im released back to work...which is supposed to be the 19th, but judging how I feel and how flippen slow my progress seems to be, then I will probably need more time.

Welcome to the board! I still cant get over that weightloss, wow wow wow! you go girl!

Sarah, you sound completely and totally normal to me. The whole food mourning thing has been discussed here many times over the last few years. Here's one thread on the topic. Here's another.

While you were carefully laying all that fat in storage over the last few years, you were also storing hormones with it. As the fat is pulled out of storage, all those warehoused hormones are dumped straight into your bloodstream. Emotional? Weepy? Irritable? Touchy? Think of it as PMS on steroids!! Again, perfectly normal and part of the ride. As your rate of loss slows, there'll be fewer excess hormones because there'll be less fat, and so the rate of hormone dumping will decrease.

If you are actually experiencing clinical depression ( a very common side effect of WLS) you don't have to be miserable. There are a lot of neat things your doctor can give you that'll take away the misery. There's no shame in reaching out for help when you need it. There's no special virtue in toughing it out and choosing to be miserable and share it with everyone around you. You would probably be surprised to know just how many of us are on something to stabilize our mental states.

You're off to a great start! Now for homework, da perfesser wants you to do some research here in the archives on the topic of "stalls", 'cause there's one just around the corner with your name on it!!

Hi Sarah, Welcome. You have done really well. I have read on RR of many having the blues or feeling a loss after surgery. I haven't, but I do take something for anxiety since before surgery, so perhaps that is why. As Perfessor said, if you need a little help, you have some choices...short term counseling, or chat with your GP.... you could take something to help til it passes... Do you have a support group? I do and am actively invovled with it..I know that helps me with lots of concerns and emotions.
Sometimes the holidays make someone feel blue.
Good Luck and continued success with your weight loss.

Thank you so much to everyone! As the days progress I have been feeling a little better. I guess like most of you said, I'll just take things one day at a time! I definately think that the holidays are making things a little tougher since everyone around me is indulging in cake, cookies, and candy gallore, but I try to remind myself how much better I feel after losing 39 pounds. Thanks again for the feedback and homework, I will definately be spending some time reading through the threads and finding some tips! Since I live in a small town there are not a lot of people who have experienced this, so it's great to be a part of this group!
