attended introductory meeting last night and I am considering bypass surgery to lower my A1c and maybe give my joints a break as I am about to have my first grandchild. Any input would be appreciated.

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Welcome. My A1c went down right away and my knees are thanking me every day. My two year old grandkids were the reason I finally did it, so I know where you are coming from. This isn't easy but there was no way I was going to be able to do this without this tool. Please let us know how you are doing as you progress.

My joints: ankles, wrists and knees have been thanking me for a year now. I used to think I might crack an ankle walking; that's how bad it was. I gave RNY (by pass) a lot of thought. Talked to my internist about it, then maybe a year or more later decided to go to an orientation meeting. Did monthly check ups
with my internist for 6 months? and said I wasn't ready. He said "Let's keep meeting every month." About 6 months later I decided I wanted to do it. It
isn't an easy decision but once I made it, I COULDN'T WAIT!!! for surgery. I felt like I was going to be reborn. And, I kind of "was." It will be a year for me on the 31st. Good luck.

welcome to the site - you'll get some great advice and support. Whether you actually have a bypass is a decision you'll have to make for yourself, but I know that everyone here will be supportive and willing to answer any questions you might have.

Hi,

It took me about 2 years to make the decision. I am glad that I did. It is a big decision. I hemmed and hawed about it and I decided I just couldn't live like I was living anymore. I made the appointment and started doing my research. When I went to the surgeon I was armed..literally...with a notebook of questions I found online and one's that I thought of. I had never had surgery before so I was a bit nervous. I talked with a friend who had the Band and a couple of people that had RNY. My NUT was pushing for the BAND and I did not like anyone pushing me one way or the other. My surgeon was awesome because he answered the questions honestly and very straightforward but did not push me towards either surgery. He said I was a good candiate for either. It would be my decision.

Just go to the meetings. Talk to people that have had it. And take with a grain of salt the people that HAVE NOT had WLS who have an opinion. Look online (here) and people will be honest with you. The good, the bad and the constipated! haha If you have a question no matter what it is...it will be answered.

It is your own journey and you will be the only one walking it but you will have family and friends to hold your hand. But you are the only one who will deal with your decision day in and day out.

Me? I would go back and do it again in a heartbeat if I had it to do over again. I was pre-diabetic and now I am completely normal. My primary care physican is over the moon! He was so glad I did what I did. I feel better than I have in years! I have two young grand kids...you can see one in my photo and and I am toting the other one (you can see a shoe). In my pre-WLS life there was no way I could have carried the little guy. We were in Washington DC at the zoo and I had to carry him for blocks. I could not have done it before. But I can now.

Hello and welcome to the group. I think you will find this a great place as you research have surgery. Lots of helpful folks here.
For me it was the best thing I've ever done, I have 4 grandsons and I am not able to get on the floor and play with them, if nothing else that made it all worth it. My bad knee is no longer bad, I rarely have pain, when I do it's usually because the weather has changed! LOL
Best of luck to you as you look into surgery. Let us know what you decide.

First of all I appologize for my spelling. It has always been my second worse problem. Thank you all for your good wishs and encouragement. My PCP is the best, he was the one that suggested that I go to the intro meeting. I did sign up for an appointment at the intro and will go when it is scheduled. My immediate problem is that I am a CPA and my busy season begins in less than a week. However, I will make time for the appointment and from what research I have done so far - I believe that the pros are much greater than the cons, I am 64 and maybe I would be more reluctant if I was younger.

Hi and welcome. I think you'll find most of us pretty biased towards this lifestyle change. I only wish I hadn't waited until I was 54. In fact, some days I'm downright MAD.
I have a 4 year old granddaughter that I adore and I just couldn't imagine not being a part of her life.
This has truly been a lifesaver for most of us. Do your research, ask questions then make your decision.
Good luck!
