Default Hi and I need help/answers please ;)

I'm Jen. My RouxEnY was on 12/14/11 I was doing great until I got in the gym about 2 weeks ago. I haven't lost a pound since. I'm getting my 90g of protein and most of my water, and all of my vitamins every day. However, I can get all that in less than 500 calories. I'm burning off about 1200 calories a day at the gym and my body is in starvation mode. The nutritionist says stop exercising and eat fats to get the calories. Follow-up doc says not to even eat good fats and do as much at the gym as possible.

Honestly, I'm LOVING being in the gym and if I could be there 3 hours a day I would. I'm already feeling 4000xs better losing the first 40 lbs. However, HOW do you get the necessary calories in to work out that much? I don't need the extra protein and adding protein powder for calories causes quite a bit of gas at this point. It takes so long to get down any food at all that I'm not even a little bit interested in eating. However, if I could find something that was low-fat and had 200 calories a bite I'd probably be thrilled because I'm so frustrated right now.

Also, what are all the reasons you're not supposed to drink with meals? Just curious. Does it really 'wash' away protein and lower your absorption? Is it just so you'll feel full longer? I'm getting really tired of my nutritionist telling me what I need to worry about and what I don't need to worry about instead of giving me a straight answer!!!

Last and most unimportant question: Do any of you guys drink (alcohol) post surgery? I've heard some people do, some people can't, some say you can if you can tolerate it and others say NEVER EVEN TRY IT.

Thanks for any and all help, guidance, and/or suggestions!
Jen

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Welcome to the board, thank you for joining us.
Congratulations on joining the Loser' Bench.
(((((HUGS))))) May your journey go well.

There is a video floating around here somewhere that shows how quickly fluids can wash food out of your pouch. Once your pouch is empty, you are going to get the hungry signal...
The 30/30 no drinking while eating rule is the most important rule that needs to be followed for the rest of your life, for success throughout your journey the rest of your life.

To get in 200 kcals, you are going to need 50g carbs or protein, or 22.2g fat. However, since you are still around 6 weeks out, 500 kcals at this point is pretty much the average intake. Your intake should slowly increase and go up to around 1000 kcals or so at the one year mark. Don't stress about it, as your pouch is still recovering and adjusting. As you get the hang of your pouch, you will start being able to eat more.
What type of exercise are you doing at the gym? Unless your surgeon has given you the release, take it slow on resistance exercise, and stick to aerobic exercise such as walking and jogging.

As far as alcohol goes. The most important issue is addiction transfer. A lot of people who are overweight/obese are emotional eaters, and/or are food addicts. Because these people are deprived of food as a comfort, there are those who turn to alcohol instead and develop an addiction.
Here's a thread on the risks, the cons, in regards to the physical effect of alcohol on post ops. Check that out as well.

And you are most likely in a stall. I just come out of one. Since we had surgery on the same day. I was stuck for about 2 weeks. My doc has not cleared me for the gym yet. He says nothing more than walking. They want 10k steps a day on a pedometer. But different surgeons want different things. Hang in there, it will pick up.

HI there... if you look out stats are way the same and you are doing way better than me. This might be a stall while your body catches up, dodnt get discouraged it seems like you are doing great. You may need some carbs with all the working out, maybe oyster crackers would help you out? I wish I was loosing at your pace. I am somewhat discouraged.

Here's an explanation of the rules and the reasons behind them.

Thanks for all the replies. I will definitely read the rules and reasons for the rules that were posted. You guys have been very welcoming, helpful and supportive.

I've been cleared for all activity. I"m on the elliptical 30 minute 4-5 times a week, upper body resistance for 30 minutes 2 xs a week, lower body resistance for 30 minutes 2 xs a week, and a class (Zumba, kickboxing, etc.) for 45-55 minutes 4 xs a week.

I believe my new addiction of choice is exercise. I'm sure this can be as dangerous as any other addiction though. Right now, as I take a very short break from working overtime, trying to meet a deadline, all I can think about is if I don't get this done in the next 30 minutes I'll miss my schedule at the gym!
