| Newbie who just got surgery date!
Hi everyone my name is Jaime and I am 35 years old. I am set for Gastric Bypass surgery on 2/7/12 which is just 1 week away. I am excited!!!! This pre-op diet sucks because I am hungry all the time but I am not cheating one bit. I am sticking to it. I am wondering how long I can expect to be in the hospital. I am taking 6 weeks off from my job but is that long enough or too long??? Also, how soon after surgery can I start taking my supplements? Anyhooo I just want to say Hello and that I am happy to be apart of this support forum!
Thanks!!

Welcome, Jaime. I was in the hospital just one night but it varies. How long you need to take off depends on your job. Some who do desk work go back after 2 weeks or so, but I know I couldn't have done that. Each of us is different. Your doctor will tell you what supplements to take and when to begin each. This also varies. Do some searches on this site and you will see many postings about all of these topics. Please let us know how you are doing as you progress and good luck!

Welcome Jaime to the forum. Congratulations on your surgery date. You'll find the people here are friendly, caring, and supportive. Keep us informed of your progress and how your doing. As Carol said, everyone is different in regards to the hospital stays as well as the surgeons. Good luck.

My wife and I were each in the hospital overnight, then released. I was back in front of the class at 2 weeks, but it was another couple of weeks before I stuck around in the afternoon for office hours.
Absent complications, I don't remember anyone who was in more than 2-3 days. Some take a few weeks, others more, a few less. I think the all-time record for heroic foolishness (or foolish heroics? ) was the nursing student who was back on rounds three days after her surgery. (That story doesn't have a happy ending! )
With complications ... well, we're going to assume you won't have any!
The pre-op diet does suck. Those who follow it to the letter despite that are greatly improving their odds of success. With your attitude about it, I can see you having a wonderful journey to a life you cannot now imagine!

Hi Jaime! Congrats on having a date!!
I was 36 when I had my surgery last year. I have an office job, with a bit of a commute. I had surgery on a Monday, home on Wednesday and off the remainder of that week. The following week, I worked from home, which was nice because I took things at my own pace. I was back in the office at the start of week 3. Outside of being periodically tired, I did very well overall.
Get your rest the first couple of days, then listen to your body as you sip and walk. Best of luck!

| Hi Jaime and Welcome! I was only in the hospital over night also. I think a lot of it depends on how you are doing... like if you're able to drink your fluids, are going to the bathroom, have your pain under control etc. I ditto what Carol Jo said about the jobs and the needed time off depending on what type of job you have. Also the need to go by your surgeons recommendations on your supplements.
Congrats on your upcoming surgery and keep us posted on how you're doing! More questions? Ask away or do some searches on the site! Hugs |

Thanks!! | Hello Jaime, congrats on getting a date and you are on your way to the new you.
I am 3 weeks out and was in the hospital 2 nights home the 3rd night, the key to being out that early is so u can slowly get ur self together , and walk, walk walk, i took 8 weeks off from work, I say as much time as u think u need and are allowed to take.
it also depends on the kind of job u do, I'm in the medical field, where i see babies and give shots, so no way I am going back early to get kicked in the guts, lol..
I believe vitamins starts about 2 weeks out, I just started taking the vitamins and for the most part have to crush them and watever other meds they want me on, I still take blood pressure meds so thats crushed, the dr or nurse should tell u more at the 2 week follow visit, and the nutritionist that you will see that she/he will help you advance ur diet... We at RR are here for you and ask any questions u desire, we can try to help,
best of luck on your journey to the NEW YOU !!

Congrats on your surgery date. I had my surgery date in November, 2011 on a Tuesday and was back at work the following Tuesday. Worked Tuesday and Wednesday and off for the Thanksgiving Holidays. I have an office job so all was fine with me working. I think you should take it a little at a time and see what you think you need when it gets here. Wishing you well on your surgery.
