Question Hello! "Newbie" from Long Island, NY looking for Bypass info

Hello!

I am considering gastric bypass, and want to get many peoples opinions on pre/post surgery.

I am also looking to connect with people local in my area (near/in Suffolk County), that I can relate with regarding these things.

I had my first Dr consultation and made appts with numerous Dr's as part of pre op requirements for LAPBAND surgery. Seemed like a less risky option....

But now, after much research, I am reconsidering it, and wonder if bypass might be better for me. I have heard too many negative things from post op "banders". They say even though weightloss is great, peoples quality of life seems to have gone down the drain. Many banders seem to be sick on a near daily basis, and fear slippage by simply coughing or vomiting- even years after surgery! I don't think I want to live like that.

So I wanted to talk to someone that has personal knowledge about gastric bypass before discussing it with my Dr.

I welcome ANY/ALL info that anyone can provide me.

There is so much info on this forum that I don't know where to begin!

For starters, where did you get your surgery done? I am considering Dr AHMAD in PJ, NY.

The liquid dieting and soft foods for weeks pre/post op is fine with me. Aside from that, what are the post op "daily" issues that you have, and what are typical meals like?

What are the common symptoms that I can expect to experience post op?

Is there long term stomache scarring from surgery?

Will I feel sick each day for months on end following the surgery?

Can I swallow pills, take asprin, chew gum etc?

WHAT is a "normal" day like after bypass, and how long does it take to reach having those "normal" days?

What are the DR follow up's like, and for how long will I need to be seeing the Dr after having the surgery?

Thanks for any help

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

First off, Welcome to the board!!! This is a really great, supportive place to be with ANY type of weightloss journey. There are very many supportive people on here, who will share their experiences with anyone. Of course, this is only "my" experience, but I had RNY 4-30, and have not experienced one problem at all. I had very minimal pain, no sickness, or anything. I went home the following day after surgery, and went back to work in 2 weeks. Sure, there are MANY adjustments you will make along the way, but it is with ANY type of weight loss. Before my surgery, I read and read thru all the posts on here, profiles, and whatever else I could find. It's a very scary thing, but I feel if you get the right surgeon, and you follow the rules, you will experience minimal problems. But, with any surgery there are risks. And you will also notice that every Dr. has different rules. Mine was a little more "strict" than others it seemed. But the main thing is to follow the rules of YOUR Dr. Oh, and there are no "stupid" questions on here either!! lol I wish you the best of luck in whatever choice you make.

Wink Hey There....

WELCOME!!!
I live in NYC! But...FYI - Lisa / Fr1endly2 is from Long Island....and had her surgery by an amazing Dr. in LI!!

Quote:
For starters, where did you get your surgery done? I am considering Dr AHMAD in PJ, NY.
I am a transplant...so my surgeon is out of state...love him though!!

Quote:
The liquid dieting and soft foods for weeks pre/post op is fine with me. Aside from that, what are the post op "daily" issues that you have, and what are typical meals like?
I did the liquid diet for the week before...at the time I thought it was miserable - but, now hear that only a week b4 is pretty great!!
POSTOP - not so bad...I was on liquids for one week...then pureed for 2 more...then soft...then around week 4 solids...but took it really slow.
Honestly - your surgeon will tell you your post op regime...and you should follow that to the "T"!!

Quote:
What are the common symptoms that I can expect to experience post op?
Of course - 'everyone is different' - but as for me...I was nauseated a bit here and there right after (I'm told from the anesthesia)...and then I was sore - very sore - but pushed thru it and WALKED WALKED WALKED!! Honestly, as long as I was taking my pain meds - I was really fine!!! Stopped taking my pain meds about 9days after...and did great!! I went home 24hrs. after my surgery.

Quote:
Is there long term stomache scarring from surgery?
I had mine laparoscopically - so I have 5 very small scars...about 1/2" or smaller... Love it!! Can barely see them now.

Quote:
Will I feel sick each day for months on end following the surgery?
I actually did very good up until the time I started on solid foods. (about 4 weeks out.)
At the time I started solids....was when I had a bit of a hard time...just learning to deal with "food"....I found for myself that ANY processed food caused me to have the "foamies"....also had to get the chewing chewing chewing down...and, not eating too much - all this contributed to my "foamies."

Quote:
Can I swallow pills, take asprin, chew gum etc?
I think you physically 'can' -
but, my surgeon suggested chewable everything... vitamins... Tylenol...or liquids.
NO ASPIRIN...
NO CHEWING GUM....

Aspirin is hard on your new pouch...and...
Chewing gum isn't good b/c it gets your gastric juices working...and can cause you a false digestion...blah, blah, blah!

Quote:
WHAT is a "normal" day like after bypass, and how long does it take to reach having those "normal" days?
Honestly, after 12 mos. post-op.... I can honestly say, I feel pretty "NORMAL"...maybe MORE NORMAL than before - or ever. I don't know that "normal" was what I ever was....
Now, my head appetite is HUGE...my stomach won't allow it - and I LOVE that! I think somewhere around 6mos. was when I stopped thinking about - and obsessing about food.

I still have moments where some food may cause me some problems...but, for me, it's only here and there.

I will tell you though, I eat pretty healthy...and make fresh choices....very rarely choose processed foods, or things too rich or spicy. I also have a very 'back to the basics' approach to food. I do a lot of salads, grilled and steamed veggies, grilled and baked poultry and fish....etc.

Quote:
What are the DR follow up's like, and for how long will I need to be seeing the Dr after having the surgery?
I saw my surgeon at the following:
  • 1 week
  • 1 month
  • 2 months
  • 3 months
  • 6 months
  • 1 yr.
After my one year...my surgeon asked to see me yearly - unless I had some issues.

HOPE this answers some of your questions....
Hope you have clarity...and can get some answers to make your decision.
Have you tried Band2gether.net (b2g) Lap-band Support Forums - Powered by vBulletin this is a great 'banded website...' - one of our members here - Neal - is a member there too!

Default What happens to all the skin?

Hi again,
I just went to your blog. I saw your swim suite pics--- love that color, you look very nice!
Ok, so you lost all that weight, where did the skin go? You look like you have always been thin!!
Part of my fear of losing weight, is in having flat/deflated boobs (been DDD my whole life since a teen, at any weight) the excess belly, arm, and thigh skin...
I'm 37 but some what firm--- even though I never excercise (though that will change). I'm about 5ft and want to lose 100lbs.... (this will still be plump for my height- but I don't want to be a stick).. so do you think it will pull in?
