Hey guys...new here...I have been investigating WLS for some time now...wanted to have it done a couple of years back, but it just didn't seem to work out.
I go to my information seminar July 3rd, and I'm hoping to have surgery some time at the end of next month or first part of August. I am self-pay, so my restrictions are less limited. I have to get a psych evaluation, have an EKG and attain a cardiac release, get a sonogram of my gall bladder and have the labs done. I'm told once all of this takes place, we can schedule the surgery.
I'm 42 years old, mother of 2. I'm 5'7'' and around 280 pounds. My BMI is 41, and I'm doing this for health reasons, more than anything. I have diabetes coming at me from both sides of my family, along with hypertension, heart disease and degenerative joints (my knees are already a mess). I'm not worried about the actual surgery (been there, done that with a radical hysterectomy 7 years ago).
My biggest fear is how much "corrective" surgery may be needed down the road. I'm pretty much counting on a tummy tuck. I'm kind of top heavy, so I'm not sure what will happen there. When I took phen-fen before, I actually never lost anything in the breast area (lost 81 pounds in 6 months).
I'm hoping to get healthy so I can be with my husband and kids for as long as possible. I lost my mom last year, and it was certainly a wake up call.
After all my research, I think I'm opting for the Lap GB. I'm nervous about recovery, with my need to return to work and start my "new" life. It should be interesting, and I've been really contemplating how things will change (I love my morning coffee and will need to work that in some how LOL).
I'll try to get more pictures on here soon. I only have a head shot right now.

| Hi Kath. Welcome to the board. We all had to go through the same tests as you are now. Jumping through hoops. But now I think I am done and my surgery is scheduled for this Monday. I am excited and nervous as I am sure everyone here that has had the WLS was at this time. I live close to Victoria. Where, if you do not mind me asking do you live? What part of Texas? I am having my surgery at UT Health Science Center in San Antonio. I too am doing it solely for health reasons. Diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol. I an newly married myself (4 years) and want to spend a long time with him and enjoy my grandchildren. Lots of motivations here. Sounds like you have that too. Good luck and hope to continu getting to know you on the board. Lots of info and friendship here. Mattie

HI KATH!!!
first off welcome to the boards!
ITs a great place that you have found to make friends....
get support and get tons and tons of information from
people at very different stages of the surgery.
I had the surgery at age 43 and lost 143 lbs.
I am a mom of three married 18 years here, from NY.
I am happy i choose to have the surgery. I didnt have any corrective
surgery afterwards, to date, and probably wont. I am okay with how I
look in clothes so its really no big deal. I did this for good health not to
get in a bikini and i have achieved this for myself.
I want to wish you the best on your journey as it begins at that first appointment in july .....its a great joruney and were all hear for your
ups and downs that come on this journey!
hugs look forward to getting to know you thru your posts
