First of all congrats on the 99 lbs you have lost. One question I have to ask you is this. Where you a diabetic before this and are you still taking meds for it? Im pre op so I cant tell you alot but have to question the low blood sugar.

hypoglycemia is a much more than you'd think, common issue post op. It would very helpful for you to get a book on how to eat to prevent drops in your glucose AND to get an inexpensive glucometer to track how low you are getting. I didn't have this until about 18? months out and had my first very horrible drop and had to be given glucose for it. Believe me out on a rope at 2 stories up is NOT when you want to discover how hypoglycemic you are!
I was NOT diabetic preop or even borderline.
But low glucose is something that needs to be addressed and eat appropriately for. I know that a lot of posties do well with the 3 times a day..personally I can't do that especially with a job that is pretty physical with walking sometimes 7 miles a shift.
I eat every 2-3 hours, try not to go 3 hours without food. I used to wake up and have a level of 55 which is very bad..could barely get out of bed, but now I'll eat right before bed and keep a protein bar right next to the bed to eat right out of bed if I need to.
....hey it's NOT just you hon!!

If your glucose level really drops during sleep (make sure the low glucose is confirmed, and the hypoglycemia-like symptom is not actually something else), then as Bree says, eating something right before you go to sleep may be best for you. Also, are you sure you are not intolerant to sugar alcohols and such? Eating things that include sugar alcohols or fruits as well as the obvious sugars will cause hypoglycemia, so be sure that you are not unknowingly eating them at the wrong time.

CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR LOSS SO FAR!!!!! 99 LBS is an amazing accomplishment.
Yes I was going to ask about sensativities to sugar alcohols and fruits and if the time of day you are eating them is affecting your night? i am just learning about the hypoglycemic response to certain foods myself. For me timing is everything. Is that a possibility?

| Hello galltall
Welcome to the boards. I went through a period sort of like that as well. I as not diabetic before surgery either. I would do fine with my sugar levels all day, but in the evening sometimes my sugar without warning sometimes, or symptoms I recognized, would go as low as 37. Honest That scared me the first time that happened. I did have symptoms the more research I did on it, but didn't realize that it was they were.....symptoms of low blood sugar. In thinking about it, at that time, I was going waaaaaaaaay too long after supper until bedtime without eating anything. After I realized that, I started to have a lite snack of something a few hours after supper. That really did the trick for me. I do carry glucose tablets with me at all times though, just in case that were to happen while driving say, home from work, because with me the symptoms were very weak, extremely tired, sweaty, shaky. Not a fun feeling to have. I really don't experience that feeling anymore, now that I have done that snack thing. Really with this surgery, it seems like you never stop learning things. HANG IN THERE KIDDO. You are doing fine. mike

My doc addressed this subject with me because I was not diabetic before but sometimes I would have low episodes so I do as Bree suggested, I eat something before I go to sleep and I always have something by my bedside if needed!
Congrats on your great loss so far!

I agree. Low blood sugar is no joke and can even be worse then high if it gets low enough. Good luck and hang in there. You are doing very well with -99#s gone!
