Default I'm new here, getting started...

I look at everything that has happened thus far and I think that my life should be near in shambles. Somehow I have pulled it together. I still fight depression everyday regardless of whether or not it is weight related. I am 24 years old. This is about WLS so I will limit my comments to that but oh my, I am such a mess.

I've been overweight and finally Morbidly obese since I was 9 or 10 years old. I just keep packing that weight on. I have been diagnosed as having Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and everything that goes along with it. At this point, I am unable to have children. That isn't the reason I am going for the WLS though. I am tired of being sick and tired. I sleep and feel as if I have never rested when I wake. I get discouraged when my clothes don't fit anymore, or less than they used to. I walk as long as my body can take it without being severely in pain.

My mothers side of the family has a lot of medical issues and few are in good health. I don't want to die before having started my life. I miss playing basketball. I want to learn to Scuba Dive. All of you look so beautiful and healthy. I can see LIFE! glowing through you.

I can't lie, I have never had surgery before and I am scared. My first appoint with the Bariatric Surgeon is on Friday and I have to drive 5 hours to get there. Wish me luck...

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Welcome to the board, thank you for joining us.
Be sure to ask the surgeon a lot of questions, including what the statistics with his own patients are. Complications, morbidities, weigh loss percentage, etc etc. Research both the bad and the good of the surgery, learn what changes in your life you have to make with this surgery.
Please keep in mind this is a tool that YOU need to work on to make good use of it. It's no magic wand that will do all the work on its own.
That said, as far as the basics go, you seem to qualify for the surgery, but the biggest question is, does your insurance policy cover the surgery, and what is their added criteria (to the basic NIH criteria).

(((((HUGS))))) May your journey go well.

You will find alot of support here. My surgery is scheduled for 8/13 and I have never been put to sleep before. It is scary but I keep thinking of the end result and how happy I will be. You are on your way and will be on the losing side before you know it.

Hi nice to meet you! You have found a VERY supportive place. We all know oh so well the depression you feel/have felt. Sometimes it feels so good knowing that there are people that have been thru, what you have been thru. Where one can "relate" to the ups and downs of our beloved best friend food! This is not an easy journey, but it IS a journey where we can FINALLY find success in weight loss. Good luck and keep us posted!

I went to a two hour seminar with the Surgeon I am to see on Friday. He has a great track record and I feel comfortable with him. I've done a lot of research and met with people that have had the surgery before. This particular doctor is considered a "expert" lapriscopic surgeon. Now, the doctor I have to see at the Army Hospital-his staff will not release any of his stats. I guess I am supposed to wait until I get there to find out that information...which does not make me feel well.

I feel as if I am prepared emotionally to make the lifestyle changes, which began for me some time ago...just not sure about going under the knife. Something new I learned today is that I have a close friend who says that if my insurance won't pay, he will. Fortunetly he is able to do something like that with no real loss financially but I feel guilty relying on someone else for this. Both insurances cover the surgery but approval takes a long time and you only get one chance, sometimes two. Part of the qualifications for the Military insurance is getting a Psych eval, which I go for on the 2nd. Why do they do this?

Psych evals are to confirm that you are mentally well prepared for the surgery itself, and for the life style changes you need to make.
You may feel yourself that you are ready, but an objective assessment is necessary. Unless you have very serious mental issues, you won't be denied. However, if certain issues are discovered, you may be asked to do some therapy before hand, or after surgery and when you are adjusting to your new body.
I know a lot of people get upset about needing a phsych eval, and feel that it's unecessary, but it is actually for the best for you, and for better results post op.
Just be your regular honest self, and you'll do fine.
