Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | My name is Vanessa and I am 39 years of age and have had weight problem since I had kids 20 + years now. It has taken me 5 months to get the courage up to join and share my story to all of you. I have not partake in 1 support group because of my experience with the GBS was not a good one. When I had surgery back in Feb. 26/27,2007. One of the doctors snagged my lower intestine and didn't know it. The next day my fever spiked and they rushed me into surgery and found that my lower intestine had a hole they stapled the hole close and cleaned all the bile out and had me on antibiotics for the duration of my stay in the hospital. So after the second surgery while in recovery, they had to put me on a ventilator because I couldn't hold my own. I stayed 5 days in ICU and total 8 days in the hospital, it was initially was suppose to be only 3 days. My husband stayed in San Diego at the hotel, while I was in the hospital, but was at the hospital from morning til night watching over me, because of what was going on with me. I'm glad that I had and still have his support. Once I was released from the hospital we stayed an extra night at the hotel in SD just to make sure everything was ok... then we traveled the 3 hours to home and stopped every 30 minutes so I could get out to walk to prevent blood clots. Here it is now been 5 months, and I get asked a lot if I would do the surgery all over again, and I still can't answer that question. The one positive thing is that I have lost 76 lbs now and only have 33 lbs to go for my ideal weight... I do feel much better these days and my feet, ankles and my back doesn't hurt like they did. But I do have some questions, and hopefully some of you can help me. I have found that my eye site, thought process, and being stable when walking isn't as good as before, has anyone else had these issues. I hope I didn't scare anyone with my story because that is not my intention, but to get support myself.

Welcome to the board, thank you for joining us. Congratulations on your weight loss, and very sorry that you had a bad experience. Please do not be afraid to share your experiences because everyone who is post op understands that this can happen to anyone, as a matter of fact, we have a number of members who have had their own close calls. Please do not be afraid to go to face to face support meetings, it's always good to be able to connect with people who know what you have been through. Pre op people researching the surgery need to know what can happen. (((((HUGS))))) May your journey go well. Now, I need to ask some question of you. Have you been seen, are you seeing a dr, any dr regularly after your surgery? Have you had any follow up check ups and lab works after surgery? Also, are you taking all the vitamins and supplements that you would have been instructed to take post op, prior to your surgery? If any of your answer to the above is "no" the first thing you must do is to make sure that you make them "yes". The best thing to do is to go back to your surgeon, but if you feel that you can't trust him and don't want to go back there, then look for another surgeon that will do the follow up for you, as well as go to your PCP and have follow up labs done. You need to have your complete blood cell counts checked out, your various blood chemistry checked out, your vitamin levels, etc etc. You will always--throughout your life-- need to keep in mind that the surgery helps you lose your weight by 1) limiting the amount you can eat at one time and 2) restricting the amount you absorb by bypassing part of the regular route for digestin and absorption. You need life long intake of extra vitamins and supplements, a set amount of protein and fluids because of reason 2), as malabsorbtion if not taken care of properly (through the supplements etc and regular follow up checks) will result in deficiencies that sometimes can be life threatening. So, your eyesight. The first thing that needs to be checked out is, vitamin A, as vitamin A deficiency causes vision disorders. ((((((((HUGS))))))) and welcome again.

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Good Morning DocSanae, Thank you first of all for responding to my post. To answer your questions, yes I take my vitamins, reg. doc visits, blood work is coming next month for my 6 mo. Doc visit. I'm doing everything he has instructed for me. His office is across the street from where I had the surgery, and every time I look over there, I just have thoughts of turning my head because I can't bring myself to deal with the internal thoughts I have regarding my situation. I'm glad to hear that my experience may help others really think about the possibilities what could happen. I never dreamed that it would have happened to me. Thank you again for your response. Vanessa

I don't muck with them once I forget to have them one night I suffer the next week with total weakness and foggy sight/mind! Drink lots of water, and don't forget about your proteins. Good luck sweetie, and I'm really sorry that your journey was a tough one. Lucky you, you have a great husband Love, Hanadi |
