Default New in this forum

Hello everyone....

I´m new here.
My name is Susanne. I live in Denmark with my son of 13 years, my fiancee and our 6 persian cats.

I have been fat since 1993, when I got pragnant (+25 kilo), and stopped smoking (+25 kilos). Dont know how many american pounds that is, but it left me with a BMI of 42, and I have tried to loose the extra weight ever since - with no real succes.

Well, many people are far more overweight than I, but i am so wery frightened to get diabetes or die of fat-related diseases. So I feel, that it is very nessesary to do drastic things to get rid of my overweight.....

In May 2006 I had a gastric banding, but i didn´t work. Well it worked, but I had always pain, and in March this year my doctor saw a gastric fistula in my stomach, so the band was removed in April.

Very concerned of loosing weight still - my doctor told me of another operation called BPD (Scopinaro procedure), which would be the best for me in my situation (with the gastric fistula).

So now I am going to Belgium to have that operation on sept. 11 - in a months time

The operation is not done in Denmark (no surgeons do that operation in Denmark), and I have to pay for it myself, otherwise I have to wait for years, and time is valuable.....

Are there others in this forum, who have had the same operation (BPD)?
It seems to me, that the most common is the Gastric Bypass..... or the Band?
It would be nice, if there were others like myself

Greetings from Denmark
Susanne

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Hello, and thank you very much for wellcoming me to your forum.

I have tried to find things on the BPD - it is not VERY easy

What i mean is, that it is not easy to explain - what the operation is about.........
But it is a sort of a bypass.

Biliopancreatic diversion

In a biliopancreatic diversion, a portion of the stomach is removed. The remaining portion of the stomach is connected to the lower portion of the small intestine. The food you eat then bypasses much of the small intestine, resulting in fewer calories absorbed and weight loss.

I try to make a link to my Belgian doctor as well, because he has a very fine site on the operation:

www.dr-lemmens.be

Greetings from Denmark

Goddag Suzanne! I couldn't find the Danish equivalent of "Welcome"? I know in German its Wilkommen -- but didn't know it in Danish. I'm having gastric bypass. I just couldn't stand the idea of having the "band" -- something swimming around inside of me with a little thing just under my skin gave me the shivers! Hope your new surgery goes well!

Welcome to the board, thank you for joining us.
I am sorry, but you are the only one here, at this moment, who will have BPD.
BPD is common in Europe, but not in the US, so that's the reason, you don't see any here.
(((((HUGS))))) May your journey go well.

Hi there welcome to the boards. Like Doc says its not over here in the USA yet. I have never heard of it. Doc if you can help me out on this one. Now how does it exactly differ from bypass. I know they unhook the intestines on the bypass and rehook them up to the new pouch. Now my Dr asked me if I wanted the 8 inches of intesine left in me he bypasses or just take them out. I have to understand what im seeing. So if you can help me out here i would appreciate it.

With BPD, as in the diagram, the section of the stomach that is removed from the pouch is actually removed totally from you, and also, the bypassed intestine is longer than with RNY.

MsVickie...ummmm, what does your surgeon mean by taking out the bypassed intestine? Because with RNY, and BPD, too, the bypassed intestine is left there because the bile duct, through which your bile (which originally is produced in the liver) and and pancreatic enzymes are excreted into the intestines through the bypassed intestines, so you need the bypassed intestine, actually. Or does he mean, he'll make the bypass shorter, in other words, make the total length of your intestines shorter (which is something I have never of)? Because as far as I know, the total length of your intestine doesn't change with either of these surgeries, it's just the layout that is changed.
