| I'm new and I'm scared.
I'm desperate for insight...
During the summer of 2005 I started pursuing gastric bypass surgery through the Cleveland Clinic's program. I met with the nutritionist, the shrink, got all the info together for insurance, etc. I sent it in and was denied just after Christmas that year, I believe. I needed 6 months of clinical weight loss efforts. I spent February 2006 through August 2006 trying to lose the weight. I lost 19 pounds from February through June but was stuck after that for months so I truly "gave up" and I'm now back up 15 pounds to 210 pounds. There was an article in the newspaper today that got me thinking about doing it again. The article was about a recent study of how WLS does prolong lives and the long term success it brings. The only thing I could focus on was the number of deaths due to the surgery. I can't understand why I'm so hung up on that. Do I not want this bad enough? I've never been so depressed in my life. I'm only 28 years old and this should be one of the happiest times of my life.
Please give me some insight and advice. Thank you!

hi! welcometo the boards! you'll love it here!!
first off any surgery has risks. but i would say if you have doubts, dont do it until you feel 100% without a doubt that this is a the right path for you. for sme of us, we were headed towards death anyways, be it stroke, heart attack, diabetic issues; so it was a risk well worth taking. i would say really really think about it. this is HARD work, and you have to go into it ready and willing from day one.

Welcome to the board, thank you for joining us.
Scared is not a bad place to be. It is a good place to start. Make a list of what you are scared of. What you are not scared of. That may tell you something about yourself, and what your true feelings and motives are.
As Kenya and BOOTS have said, life after surgery is NOT a bowl of cherries, it is a lot of hard work, and the surgery and the pouch is only a tool to help you lose weight as you are working to set up healthy habits for life, to sustain your through the maintenance of the weight you've lost throughout your life. It is no easy job, and NOT the easiest way out.
If you have doubts of whatever, whether it be about the statistics, the risks, the changes in habits, you probably are not yet ready. Unless you are very ready, unless you have come to terms with the fact that this surgery has a lot of risks, and how do these risks stand up to the life you have now, you probably won't be able to make your decision.
Whatever you decide, it is for you and yourself only, and you are the only person who can decide, and take on the responsibility of your decision.
If you pursue this avenue, be very sure.
Whatever your decision is, we are always here for you when you need us to help you regain a healthy life, by whatever method you decide on. (Unless, of course, it is some illicit program that just ain't right.)
((((((HUGS))))) May your journey go well.

Here here! This is a total complete lifestyle change and you have to be ready for it. Do lots and lots of research...find out everything you can about the surgeon that you have chosen right down to the hospital that you will be at. I wish you the very best of luck in your venture.

| Today is the first day
of the rest of your life! Oh honey; I'm so sorry you're feeling so bad.
Its not easy getting approved, but if your doctor (PCP) and your surgeon agree that this is the right thing for you to pursue, then you have to work the whole program prescribed by your insurance. You should be able to go to your insurance company's website and look up on the website exactly how they define the requirement for the surgery and what their requirements are to approve surgeries. They use a very specific formulaic approach to how they approve these things. They've probably been harder on you because your stats are right on the border. But work with your surgeon's office, they are usually real savvy about how to work throught the insurance companies and they can help you get you approved.
We're all here to help -- we know what it means to fight our weight -- hang in there and don't let it get you down. We are cheering you on to success! |

Welcome and nice to meet you!!! They have given you very good advice. This is a VERY scary thing. And even when you get to that point where you are comfortable, right before your surgery date that fear comes back 10 fold. But I can say that this was the right decision for ME. It's not easy...no. You will hit many bumps in the road while trying to change your lifestyle, but it CAN be done. Wishing you the best thru your decision process.

| I agree ~ when the time is right, you will know. I called my surgeons office for the first time in 1999. How's that for taking my time? For me it was a long and arduous process but I wanted to watch people I knew that were in all different stages. I know a gentleman who lost only ~ 14lbs when he learned to cheat and thought he could get away with it. I know another man who had major complications but came out of it and was able to say he didn't regret it. One of my best friends came thru with flying colors "never took a tylenol". It completely runs the gamut of possible effects. For me, I was tired of living in fear of dying from a heart attack or stroke. I literally have been waiting to keel over for years and am truly thankful that even this early out I don't worry about that like I did. I truly believe that, for me, I have made a positive change that will most likely extend my life and the quality of my life. The benefits completely outweighed the risks for me. That's what you have to figure out -- what's right for you. Good Luck! After all is said and done, I have to say I would not tell some one to do it, nor would I tell them not to do it.
