Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | I have a question for the Doc. Do you know if many Lupus patients have RGB done. And what is your opinion on lupus patients regarding WLS? Thanks. I didn't begain my struggle with weight until I was treated for Lupus. But I've always had bad eating habits, but was very active until I became very sick. Now, with all the weight I carry, every hour is painful. And I refuse to take any more steroids!

I don't think there's any comprehensive data out for Lupus patients. Yes, steroids make you gain weight, but often, for the treating drs, it's that or your health getting worse. I think there are some reports on the effect of certain types of anti cancer drugs that seem to help with lupus, but I'm not sure, I'm not an expert there. You'll have to talk to your dr about all this, or if you don't feel comfortable talking about it with your present dr, seek someone out for a second opinion. Also, you will have to talk with the bariatric surgeon about the effect on lupus, as he/she is the one who will do the surgery. Since lupus in itself doesn't cause obesity, and as an illness, is completely unrelated to obesity, it will have to be treated as it is, weight loss surgery is not going to affect it in regards to improvement of the condition. If taking steroids become the only option for you, then you may find yourself facing the threat of obesity again. Also, if you have kidney disease due to lupus, that may be a contraindication for weight loss surgery. I think with your case, you should attend information seminars and get the chance to speak with the surgeon directly, as well as speaking with the immunologist who is treating you.
