Default Hi Everyone!!!

I've just discovered this great website and just wanted to say Hi to everyone!!!
I'm in the process of getting the LAP RNY done and I'm trying to research as much information as possible.
In Australia alot of the pre-surgery process is different to the USA but the risks from surgery are all the same.
I've been to see a surgeon who was great and answered all my questions but I would love to hear all about people who've actually HAD the operation.
I'm scared to death of the actual operation!!!
Here in Australia, the Lap Banding proceedure is by far the preferred operation but for someone who has a BMI of 46, the weightloss just doesn't seem to be quite enough from the research I've read.
Anyway I'm enjoying reading about the successes of members on this site.
Congratulations to you all!!!

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Hi there,
First of all I'd love to weolcome you on board. I'm pretty sure you'll like it, we're like a family over here everyone is supporting the other. Plus Doc Sanae is our medical advisor, Feel free to ask here any question, she's a reliable source of medical information.
Year 2000 I did the lap. gastric banding it worked at the begining (1-1.5) year. Lost around 40 kg but since I'm a sugar eater I gained them all. struggled with the weight from 2003-2005. The maximum I reached was 160 kg. I did the gastric bypass last April 18th, my weight was 152, I'm almost 4 week post-op now and I feel great total loss so far is ~13 kg and I'm pretty sure I will loose more in the coming days.
Again I'd love to welcome you, and congratulate you for your wise decision.

Wow!!!
You sound like me, I cannot not resist anything sugary and sweet (my biggest downfall in terms of dieting).
That was actually one of the reasons I decided against Lap Banding. Here in Australia I've heard and read of so many people failing with their lap banding for that reason. We have had to take out a loan to pay for my surgery (in the next 6-8 months) so I wanted to pick the right type of surgery the first time because if it fails, i won't be able to do it again!!!
We do have private health insurance but we always have gap payments (which in this case is $3000-$4000). I think it's great that you've lost 13kgs, you must be feeling so much healther for it. I personally have 60kgs to lose to be in the "healthy weight" range again. I'm currently 131kgs (my heaviest ever) and have had alot of ankle surgery and I'm getting alot of joint pain from the excess weight. Also yo-yoing blood pressure and low energy levels, snoring at night etc.. so i'm hoping the surgery will help relieve some of these problems.
Did you have alot of post op pain? Have you had any of the horrible after surgery effects you often read about?

((((HUGSS))))
Don't worry you're not alone!!!! well all the kind of pains and inconveiences you are having right now, I had them too. Of course now I feel healthier but I still have a hell to loose!! I'm targeting to loose 80 kgs to be in the healthy BMI range. My 1st objective is to break the 100 kgs barrier, 2nd is to become 80 kgs, ultimate goal is to become 75-65 kgs!

Well, according to which best of the WLS's I had 2 types and to be quite honest the band worked at the 1st 2 years but after I got how to trick the physical pain that I got when I swallow food without chewing it well, and to overcome this feeling by eating smooth hi-calorie food like ice cream , tarts, cakes...etc. the band had lost it's effeciency! and gained back all the weight of not 20 kilos more!

The most Gastric bypass advantage is to reduce the body absroption by 60-70% less. Health proffesionists say that after the 1st 2 years the % increases. But will never get back to 100%. Plus with this surgery your stomach size will be much smaller which means you'll get full with less amount of food. You will eat less for sure, and even if you try to eat more you'll get discomfort feeling if not throwing up.

I feel great right now and won't regret the money and the pain that I had just for 2 weeks after the surgery because I had mine open (10-14cm long incision). I hope your's is laporoscopic, if it is then this will be less painful.
You may need to talk with people who have acheived their weight lose objective. There are many on this board like Fr1endly2, Heidi, ChristyBlue and many others.

Good luck and looking forward to seeing you joining weight lose jorney

Default Goodluck Becca!!!

Thankyou for your welcome Becca!

What a exciting time it is for you, just over a week until you have your WLS. That's fantastic!! I'll be checking this site to see how you got on and will be thinking of you from the otherside of the world.
I've already found this site really helpful and it has answered alot of questions I had about the surgery.
We don't really have any Australia Forums on Gastric Bypass because over here they are not performed that often (which scares me a little - regarding my surgeons experience in the proceedure) so everything I've read is mainly about lap banding. I think I will be a regular on here before and after surgery as I've done quite a bit of research on the internet and found this the best site yet (and definately the friendliest ). It's a credit to you and all the other members who are generous enough to share their thoughts, stories and support to others!!!
Please let me know how your surgery goes (when you are up to it of course)!!!
Regards, Kylie

Welcome to the board, aussiegal!
I'm glad you are finding this site and board helpful to you.
If there are any Qs, just post them, or if the time differnece doesn't daunt you, join us in chat whenever you notice someone in the chatroom. You can tell if anyone is there by just checking if there are any numerals beside the chat room button in the nav bar of this board (not the top nav bar for the entire site).
It's only natural that you are scared of the operation, everyone fluctuates from one emotion to another especially as their date gets close, but with good support, you are sure to be able to have a smooth enough sailng.

OT, but I was in your beautiful city close to 20 years ago when Sydney hosted an IDF (International Diabetes Federation) meet. The opening ceremony was held at the Opera House, the mid-meeting party on the beautiful lawns of Sydney U. and I loved the week I spent there. I have always hoped to be able to make it back there some day, but so far, no such luck. Well, one of these days.

WELCOME to the board Aussiegirl!

I had my surgery 11 1/2 months ago and it was the best thing i ever
choose to do for myself. I have lost in this time 141 lbs, fit in clothes
sizes that i never recall being and im so happy.

I had LAP RNY. At the time of my first consult with my surgeon I weighed
310 lbs. I knew i was ready to do this. I had lost weight many times in my life and always gained back plus each time. I really felt at this highest weight that i was at risk for a heart attack or stroke out weighed the risks
associated with the surgery so i went forward. I had no complications at all.
I feel the surgery has personally fixed my OVER EATING/NOT GETTING FULL birth defect. I no longer eat massive size portions of foods i eat like a lady. THIS hasnt been a totally easy year but with all the ups and down i would still do this again in a flash without a blink of the eye.

WHEN i first was considering surgery as my "LAST" resort for looseing weight. I did start out reasearching the banding. I was a BMI 51. AND with my history of obesity i made the choice that the gastric bypass was the right way to go for me to "ALL" my weight and keep it off long term.

ITS a personal decision and with lots of thought you will make the decision
thats right for you. I am here for any and all questions you may have and maybe sometime we can hook up in chat and gab more!

LISA
