Default Pre-Op Questions and nerves

I am new to this as of last night I signed up because everyone seemed so supportive and I'm very excited about having this support.
I'm married and a mother of 2, one in college and one 11 year old girl. My whole family is super-supportive and my date is scheduled for 11/20/2007. I started consultation and all the pre-op requirements in late April. I've since lost 30 lbs just by 'watching it' but now hitting a plateau and am anxious to get started on the surgery and after.
I do have a couple of questions. First, how long does the surgery take if you're having laparscopic? When the nurse scheduled my surgery she asked if I still had my gall bladder, why's that? A friend of mine had this done two years ago in Feb and she had gall stones, is that common? I'm very excited and nervous. I've had two c-sections so I'm not afraid of the surgery itself or the recovery, I recovered relatively easily from them, My biggest concern is the exercise and my ability to 'stick with it.' Any ideas. I'm looking forward to this chat site, I've never done a chat site before like this, so I had to struggle to figure out how to post this. Sorry this is so long.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Hi Lolo, welcome to the boards. You have come to a very friendly and helpful site. Let me suggest that you read through some of the past posts as there are many great ones that are filled with informative stuff. First thing you need to understand is that each and every surgery and surgeon is different, and not all people handle it the same. I think my surgery took about 2 hours and I had to have a gallbladder ultrasound preop to make sure it was fine...and it was, so I still have mine. They say that you have a great chance of the gall stones with losing weight so rapidly though. This surgery is in no way an "easy way out". It is your new tool to your new life. I wouldnt change a thing, its the best decision that I ever made. Good Luck!!

hi lolo
SO GLAD you found the site
and found it to be comfy
enough to post.

As far as lapriscopic recovery, EVERYONE is different but the recovery is far simpler
then the open surgery recovery. I was back to working in my family daycare business in 12 days. I weaned off pain meds quickly as well.

My surgery was text book perfect, going in my surgeon didnt expect it to be being i carried my weight all in the gut, and i believe it took about 2.5 hours. Not shabby at all. I took meds to help preserve my gall bladder PRE op it was in good condition they did a sonogram so we opted to leave it in and i still have mine 2.5 years post op. I imagine the med helped and i took it during the rapid weight loss stages.

I look forward to getting to know you thru your posts!
u did fine posting and dont worry about lengthy posts
its more important u get the support we all need along
this scary journey

my surgery was lap and 2.5 hours (he cleaned out some of the adhesions from my hysterectomy). I still have my gall bladder and he put me on Acti gall for 6 months to dissolve any gall stones that might form! I was back to work in my office on 8/13 (surgery was 8/1) and 2.5 months out, I'm 57 pounds lighter! These boards will help you MORE than you know....from hair loss to bad breath...read as much as you can and ask all the questions you come up with....!! Someone around here has been through it and will calm your fears! WELCOME ABOARD!!!

Hi Lo Lo Im Vickie. Welcome to the boards. You have found a great place to ask questions and even help answer some.

The surgery depends on the surgeon and how much he has to do to get to your stomach. A normal one is about 2-3 hours long. Your gallbladder helps to digest fats. After this surgery you wont be having the fats go through your system anylonger. This somtimes causing it to go bad. If your surgeon wants to remove it along with the surgery then let them. Its a 2 for 1. I already had my gallbladder removed a long time ago so this wasnt the case but he makes his patients have a ultrasound to check it anyways.

After you start losing weight it will inspire you to excerise some. Congrats on your date.

Welcome to the boards. I am Cyndi.

My surgery was lap band. Don't know how long it took, I didn't ask that questions...lol. They did an upper GI to check my gallbalder prior to surgery and it was fine. I will have another one in Jan to make sure it is still okay.

Looking forward to seeing you around the boards.

Welcome! this is a great place, ask, help, encourage, get encouraged, vent, console, get consoled, all of it! My surgery took longer than expected cause i had a panic attack and wouldn't let them begin on time, they had to have my hubby come in and talk me into it again. my surgeon did not remove my gall bladder because it was healthy, but did prescribe Actigall for 6 mos. to prevent any stones from forming. mine was laproscopic roux en y and the outside incisions healed very quickly, no stitches, just taped up, stitches were all inside! i took awhile to get some energy back, about 6 weeks, but since then i have lost enough and feel good enough to exercise again, walking is what my surgeon has encouraged, and its easy enough!

Hello and welcome to the boards. I haven't had my surgery but I am looking to have it around the same time as yours. My doctor said either the second or third week of November. So good luck and I look forward to your posts. We can keep each other entertained while recovering.....lol
