Smile Newbie w/ ?s for lap banders

Hi everyone! I have read thru the post in the forums over the past few months. My husband and I both are preparing for WLS, hopefully, in January. His insurance has already approved him, but I have BC/BS and am finishing up my 6 month stint of dr. visits. So he is waiting on me so we can start together. My question is for those who have had the lap band: Knowing that you can slip and eat sweets etc.. how have you adapted to the changes in diet and how has your weight loss been so far? I am teeter tottering from the lap band to the gastric and need to make a decision.

Thanks for your imput and congratulations to all of you for the success you have had!

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

I had the gastric bypass, and although I have heard that both it and the lap band work, I have heard that the success rate of the lap band patients isn't as high simply due to the fact that you can learn to maneuver around with the lap band. That's just what I've heard. Whatever you decide, I wish you the best. Keep us posted.

From my understanding that you don't loose the weight as fast as the gastric bypass. When I first started the process that is what I wanted but my isurance company won't approve the lap band only gastric. So here I am waiting for a date. Good luck with your decision and welcome to the boards.

Welcome to the boards and I too had gastric bypass. But Im sure there might e a few on here checking in maybe. I had originally went in thinking lap band but then my surgeon suggested differently and here I am 6 months later and thrilled with the sucess it has brought so far. Good luck with your journey for both you and your husband and hopefully some lapers will be on soon.

Thanks for your imput. I will be going for a day of classes at the surgeon's office in December as well my appt with the surgeon himself. I am sure they will be able to help me make the right choice. We have attended one of the WLS groups at our local hospital, but most of them have had the gastric bypass as well. I will check back later to see if any banders find my post. Thanks a bunch!!!

For some reason at my seminar they, the surgeons, said that insurance companies dont seem to cover lap band as much. Dont know why. But they said from their experiene and dealing with the patients insurance companies that hardly anyone gets approved for the band. Sorry I cant tell you why though. Good luck.

BC/BS of Alabama began covering Lapband this past April. At least our policy has anyway. I was so excited since I had been researching it since last November and like having another choice of WLS.

Well that is good news then. Maybe things are different here now too. I started my journey way back last August of 2006 and it took me about 9 months to get thru all the clearances and etc...So that fist seminar in Augsut of 06 is when they talked about the coverage not being good for banders. So kudos on the good news that yours will. Insurance clearance is a huge step.

I ALSO WAS GOING TO DO THE BAND AND DECIDED AGAINST BECAUSE OF ALL THE STORIES I HEARD OF PEOPLE FAILING WITH THE BAND AND END UP GETTING RNY. IF IM GOING TO GET SURGERY I WANT IT ONLY ONE TIME. LOL

PLUS THERE ARE SOM PATIENTS AT MY DOC OFFICE WHO HAD THE LAP BAND WHO I HAD SPOKEN TO LAST WK. WELL ONE GIRL HAD HER SURGERY IN JANUARY AND ONLY LOST 30lbs AND I DONT REMEMBER WHAT THE OTHER GIRL LOST BUT IT WAS ALSO A VERY DISAPPOINTING #. NO WAY DO I WANT TO GO THRU THIS SURGERY AND ONLY END UP WITH SUCH LITTLE RESULTS. ALSO AN OTHER REASON WAS I WOULD HATE TO ALWAYS HAVE TO GO TO THE SURGEONS OFFICE TO CONSTANTLY GET THE BAND ADJUSTED, ETC. I JUST FELT ALL OF THESE DISAPPOINTMENTS WERENT WORTH IT AND IF I WAS GOING TO DO THIS WHY NOT GO ALL THE WAY WITH SOMTHING THAT WILL LAST ME FOREVER AND WILL HAVE A GREAT SUCCESS RATE.

WHAT EVER YOU DECIDE GOOD LUCK TO YOU AND YOUR HUSBAND. ITS GREAT YOU ARE DOING IT TOGETHER
