| Newbie | I finally found how to post. (At least I hope I have) Anyways, my name is Drema and I have just started this journey. I go to see my surgeon on 11/12/07. I feel that, with my health, I don't have any other choice. I am a diabetic , high blood pressure, arthritic, and I am only 45. I know this cant be it. I need hope that this surgery will help. I hear alot of positive and then I hear negative things about this surgery and I am confused at to what to do. I do not want to have this surgery and then be even sicker for the rest of my life. So here is my questions if anyone can help. 1.What happens if I have a low blood sugar? I can't gulp a glass of OJ or apple juice after the surgery or have any kind of sugar. This is life threatening. What would I do? 2.I have heard that the dumping syndrome is just like a low blood sugar feeling. This is very scary. Is it true that you can't perdict what foods would give this syndrome to you? Is it all trial and error? Do you really get heart palpatations, shakes, sweating, confused state? 3. Lastly, is there a list of questions I should be prepared to ask my doctor at our appt., besides the ones above? Thanks so much for listening. I am very scared and feel that maybe I am not strong enough to do this, after all I wouldn't be the weight I am if I could control what I put into my mouth. Thanks again for listening! Drema |

| Super Moderator | Welcome to the board, thank you for joining us. Good luck with your process, and your research. Now, about your Qs. What do you mean by low blood sugar? If you are taking meds for diabetes, then the likelyhood is that you will come off them pretty quickly after surgery, even though the weight loss hasn't started much. This, according to recent research, is because some of the hormonal regulations relating to eating, digestion and absorption are altered, and lower the blood sugar levels to normal, as a result, so low blood sugar due to medication should not be a concern post op. For information about dumping and other post op concerns, I suggest you check out the article linked into the thread called Bariatric Surgery: Postoperative Concerns. I have linked the thread here, so just click the blue letters and the thread will come up. The link to the article itself is in the first post of the thread. Have you attended an information seminar sponsored by your surgeon? If you have, there must have been millions of questions that came up to your mind. Don't be afraid to ask all of them. The emotional roller coaster when trying to decide on this surgery is quite common, and the surgeons expect all sorts of questions from you. There is no question that is stupid. This is about your life, so you need to ask all and any question that come to your mind. (((((HUGS)))) May your journey go well.

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | I just wanted to say Welcome!! I didn't have any "health" related co-morbites. Just snoring, achy bones and stuff. I haven't dumped yet either and I'm over 6 months out. But I can say that EVERYTHING is trial and error. I suggest (as others) to read, read, and read some more. Try to soak all of the info up. Talk to your Dr. It is VERY normal to be nervous. It is a "risk". We all know this going in. But usually we are at the point where we KNOW we have to do something, so taking the risk seems worth it. We're here if you need us! |
