I'm off to the Sleep Center just as soon as I get off here, take out the dog and shower. I'm trying not to get too excited because this will just be an initial visit to schedule me at a later date for a sleep study. But at least it will be some information when I go Friday to my doctor for a physical and blood work. I'm just so worried that she will not be supportive of this. But then, I'll have to find another doctor who is. I talked with my boyfriend's SIL last night and she is really supportive and being diabetic herself, wants me to keep her updated on everything. Her diabetic nurse had RNY too and she has asked her a lot about it. She is very supportive. I know it is all still way off, but going to the Sleep Center today at least makes me feel like I'm moving in the right direction. Hope you all have a wonderful day! |

Can I ask a stupid question?? Why do you have to go to the sleep center? Is it a Dr requirement?

Yes good luck. I went through the study all ready. Bring a book, comfy sleep wear and the knowledge you wont get too much sleep! You feel like a living robot once they get you hooked up! HEHE

The doctor said he is 100% certain without a doubt that I have sleep apnea, probably quite severe. They also told me that I have really bad sinuses (which I am not at all aware of) and a heart murmur (which I have been told once before, but my regular doctor didn't hear it). The actual sleep study will be December 16. I don't understand how someone who already has difficulty sleeping is supposed to sleep in a strange bed, all hooked up to things, knowing that there is a camera watching as well! LOL Anyway, I always thought of sleep apnea and kind of a bogus thing, the flavor-of-the-month disorder. These guys scared the daylights out of me. I'm so glad I went. I mean, I've thought I've had sleep apnea for years, but never took it seriously. They said that it is really good I did, because if I have surgery, that is the last thing the surgeon would want would be a patient with undiagnosed sleep apnea, and that treating if before surgery will help me get through it better and heal faster too. Now I can't wait until Friday, when I see my regular doctor!! |

There ya go....!!! I've heard of so many people who had this problem prior to surgery & after the weight loss, no longer have to deal with it! (I personally didn't have it)....it will help with your fight with the insurance company, as this is a common co-morbidity for WLS patients!

Thanks TrulyKath - yes, that is one of the comorbidities my insurance requires. Either uncontrolled hypertension (I am borderline but not on meds), hyperlipidemia (which I am also borderline on, no meds), diabetes (which I don't have) OR sleep apnea. I also found out that I weigh considerably less than I thought (or their scale is off). I was sure I weigh 250. I had an MRI a couple of months ago and was told it was only 230 - but I had some out-of-control eating there for a period so I thought for certain it MUST be 250 by now, but their scale said only 225. But that still gives me a BMI of 47, well over the 40 necessary for my insurance as well. I feel like I'm finally getting somewhere!!! |
