Welcome to the board, thank you for joining us. (((((HUGS))))) May your journey go well. What procedure is best for you is best decided by talking with your surgeon, as your weight, comorbidities, risk factors, and some times your age and even your insurance come into the picture. A lot of the insurance cos only pay for gastric bypass, whether open or lap, and not lap band. Other insurance pay for lap band, but only for teenagers. So, the first thing you need to do, is what your insurance policy is, whether WLS is included, if so, what type, and what criteria you need to meet to be approved. Along with that, attend information seminars sponsored by surgeons and bariatric centers. TALK face to face with other people who've had the surgery, by attending the info seminars and support groups. Good luck with all.

HI WELCOME TO THE SITE I LOOK FORWARD TO GETTING TO KNOW YOU THRU YOUR POSTS.... AS FOR WHICH SURGERY...WELL WHEN IT COMES to gastric bypass hands down lapriscopically is the best choice. You wont have a huge scar, recovery is quicker and far safer then open. As far as between the gastic bypass or the lapband its your choice. FOR me i would have never lost enough from the banding so i thought the bypass was a better choice for me. ONLY you can decide.....with your surgeon whats best for at this time.

Welcome dees! You've certainly come to a great place to get ideas. I did laproscopic RNY GBP -- I'd recommend that to anyone. It was a very easy surgery and recovery (unlike open) and the right surgeon will make it all work. I didn't go for the lap band because I didn't like the idea of there being something "inside of me" -- and that thing that has to sit just under your skin that they inject with saline --ick -- I just couldn't do it. I now have this little funny "smiley" face on my tummy --- from the tiny incisions and my belly button -- its really kinda funny. I would definitely recommend laproscopic RNY. Good luck!

I recently went to the WLS nutrionist and we had a candid conversation about the different surgery's available a she said the Lapband is best for the person who can stick to a diet and really just needs additional help with curbing your appitite. Bypass helps best if you dont mind not being able to eat certain foods for the rest of your life and if you really do have an excess of 100lbs to loose and you are willing to take vitamins for the rest of your life. Just some food for thought. your doctor would give you sound advice too.

For me it is a pretty easy decision. I'm going for laparoscopic RNY - because my insurance won't cover lap band if you are over 20. They will only cover it if you are 18, 19, or 20. Besides, I couldn't "stomach" the thought of having the lap band in me - and I feel RNY is more effective for me and would provide better long-term results. If I were 18, 19 or 20, I might choose differently. My situation is very different now at my age than it was then. I can't think of a reason to choose open RNY unless your doctor recommends it. It is a big surgery. Laparoscopic, while not a minor surgery, is not nearly as invasive, but there are situations in which a surgeon would recommend open over laparoscopic so you would need to check that out as well. Anyway, because my insurance ONLY covers lap RNY (though I'm assuming they would pay for open if during the procedure it had to be converted - hummm, I better check that out) , it was a no brainer for me. |

Hi there. Im Vickie. Welcome to the boards honey. The surgeon you see will tell you which one they do. Or mabye all three. I dont think many will do the open one unless its necessary to do it that way. Most can be done RNY laproscopic. Im not a favorite of the Lapband surgery. Just ask to see a actual one ......better yet hold it in your hand. That was enough for me to say ok lets do laproscopic. Check with your insurance an see which one they pay for. Some wont cover the lapband surgery. So check it out first before you get your heart set on one.
