Red face Newbie Here!

Hello everyone,
My name is Dolores and I am new to the board. I discovered your board by doing a Google search for GBS and Renewed Reflections came up. I started poking around the website and I came across the Before and After Pics and I decided to join.

I have been researching GBS for about 3 years on and off. I had made up my mind about 3 years ago when a co worker had the surgery and he lost over 200 lbs. We talked over and over about the procedure and I had decided to have it done.

Then I got scared and started 'listening' to the medical experts and decided against the surgery.

3 years later, I am researching again, and made the choice to schedule a consultation with Barix Clinic in Langhorne, PA. After watching Brookhaven Rehabilitation Center's program on TLC yesterday, I now realize just how biased and skewed the information is about the surgery.

Yes, there are complications with the surgery, death is the major one...but isn't death, diabetes, high blood pressure, etc etc also complications from being OBESE?

So after I made this connection and realized that being 320lbs and 5'4" could kill me just as much as the surgery, I made the call and left a message to schedule a consultation.

I am afraid of having a heart attack at 35 and I want to make an informed decision. So I am here to learn, ask questions and receive some encouragement as I make this life altering decision.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Welcome to the site and this is a decison you need to make yourself. I was in the same boat as you. I was only 38 years old at the time and I wanted to be there for my children and be able to see them grow. I made the decision to go thru with it and strated my journey of appotiments and etc...It was along 9 months but i was finally cleared and I believe its the best thing I have done for my self. I am 7 months post op and I feel so much better than I ever have. I have lost almost 100 pounds. I feel good, and I am off of my blood pressure meds. Like I said, its a decision you have to be ready to deal with once you make it. yes there are risks involved but there is with anything now a days.
This site is wonderful for advise, information and support. Welcome aboard and good luck with your decision.

Welcome to a wonderful place for advice and support. I have also been on the rollercoster of makeing the same decision. My process started nine months ago and just being 6 days out I would do it over again. Like you said there are complications in be obese as well, but I wanted to live long enough to see my grandson garaduate high school, (he was just born in July). It is a decision that you have to make. There are alot of good people here to answer questions and you can go look at the old postings for other info.

Welcome to the boards. Im Vickie. I like you researched this surgery so much. I decided to do it then backed out. Im like you when I reached a certian weight.... I had to do somthing. Mine is not for vanity reasons. I had mine done to live. Plain and simple. I feel better already and all the medications I took are not gone except for 3 which are not weight related. If you stick around you will find alot of information on this board and if you dont find your question ASK IT! Most of the time somebody can help you. If not we will always say ASK YOUR DR !

Thank you for the welcome everyone. I will respond to each of these seperately if that is ok?
I truly understand about wanting to live and see your children grow up. I have no children at this time, but I am approved to adopt and currently looking for a child from the foster care system. I too still desire to be a mother to a child where I can go out, play, run and enjoy life and not sitting in the house embarassed and ashamed of my weight (like I do NOW!).
The appointments are what I started today. I called the Barix Clinic back, got nervous when she told me I could come in TOMORROW () and told her next week would be great. So I scheduled an appointment with the female surgeon I hoped and prayed I would get and my consultation is MONDAY, DECEMBER 3rd. I can't believe I did this!!!!
Wow! Your journey took that looooong? Man, I hope and pray it's not that long, but whateve God wills he knows what is best FOR MY SITUATION!
Congrats on the success so far...that is so fishin' awesome!!! Woot Woot!!!!
And I've made my decision. I am going to go for it...the first step was made...I made the appointment for the consultation. I will call tomorrow so I can see my PCP Friday and let her know this is my choice and I pray she will be for me and my choice and not against me!
I pray for continued success over the coming months and years, and I will be asking ALOT of questions before Monday

Thank you TamTam. WHOA. You are still recovering. How are you feeling? I pray you are getting some rest and not pushing yourself.
Is there a list of questions on the forum that I can print out and ask my surgeon on Monday?

Thank you! And you are right. This site was actually what prompted me to call the BC back today over and over until I got the rep on the phone who called me last week...if it weren't for some of the posts and links I have seen here, I would have never had the courage to make that appointment for Monday!

Another thank you for the welcome. I am glad I found this forum as well. I feel safe and encouraged now. I do not want to talk to any of my co workers about my choice, and have only told my one sister what I am thinking of doing. My mom and older sister I will talk with later this week.
I know I will learn a lot from this forum. The encouragement I saw in the Before and After thread showed me how much you all care about one another here!!!!!

Thank you Vickie. It is wonderful to meet you! I have read so many sites, personal websites, medical websites, etc etc. I want all opinions, all facts and misinformation so I can make an informed and educated decision after speaking with the surgeon on Monday.
I will continue to ask questions, read and read and read until the time comes for me to have my surgery. I also want to tap into the Barix Clinics support groups and forum (I registered but haven't posted since I wasn't sure until yesterday/today I was going to go through with my decision!) so I can meet face to face with individuals who are having the surgery, have had the surgery and are also in the same boat as me, just getting started.
I am glad to hear about your drop in taking medications. I am currently only on 80mg of Prilosec daily with the doctor wanting to put me on Protonix since my stomach issues are so severe.
I was taken off of Coumadin almost two months ago next week (had a pulmonary emboli May 06), THANK GOD!!!!
So I am hping the GERD will be resolved once I have the surgery.
God Bless.
