Well to be honest I was thinking lap band and then my surgeon suggested the RNY. I thought about what he said and he was correct and I can honestly say I am so happy that I went this route. I am 8 months post op and feel 100% better and I feel great. Best of luck with your decision.

hi Gina welcome! when i was first going thru the steps for surgery, i too was leaning tword the band, but with the more research i did and speaking with my surgeon i decided the RNY was the way to go for me...here is a couple reasons why...when talking with my surgeon, for as much weight as i had to lose it would be more successful, you have more reason not to eat the sweets etc. dumping, etc. also with the band you have so many dr appts for fills and such and i am not much of a dr person to begin with, also alot of insurance companys do not cover the fills, which can be very expensive. i am very happy with my decision, i have had no complications, have been feeling great and am down 100 pounds! noone can make your decision for you, i think you will know after research what is best for you...take care and keep us posted on your journey...good luck!

Hi Gina, welcome to the best site that I have found. I am 3 weeks out and I to had the RNY, but it was not my original choice I wanted the lap band but due to an erossion that I have in my esphogus my surgeon said that the band was not for me he would not do it on me he would only do the RNY, I was alittle disappointed about that I did all my research on the lap not RNY so I wanted the surgery because I could not do the weight loss thing anymore so I did it, and I do not regret having it done, I have had no problems so far. I suggest that you do research for both surgerys and get the pros and cons for both, talk with your surgeon about each, and this decision can only be made by you as to which one will work best for you. Good luck in your journey. And we are here for support and questions. Look forward to hearing more from you on your decision.

Hi, thank you all for your help, please continue to send me responses. I too, originally planned for the RNY, because I only know people that have had it, and they are happy with their decision, besides the point that they look and feel GREAT! I started leaning to the lap band because when I went for my seminar, it showed both, but was talking more of the band. Everyone there said they wanted the band. Everyone there was concerned of the percentage of death in the RNY compared to the lap band. They all talked about how band is less complicated on your body. With my eating habits, I know the RNY is for me. I don't think that I could go through all of this for the lap band and still have to watch what I eat for fear of gaining by eating the wrong foods. From what I hear and have read, I know of the dumping syndrome and getting sick if you eat the wrong things, kind of like a slap on the hand, or a punishment for me, which is what I believe that I need. I've went from diet to diet and exercise class to exercise class, only to find that now, I am almost 300 pounds. The most I ever was was 273 and I lost a little, boy, how the weight just goes on you! I am one of those people who seem to think that I can eat everything and it is alright. boy, am I wrong. I have to do something. I have high blood pressure, am only 46 and feel like I am 76. I know that the RNY is for me, I'm just a little afraid of not making it through the surgery. Not for me, but for my family members. At this point, I am so unhappy with my life, that if I know that I am trying to do this and I don't make it, then I won't know anyway. Right? At least I know that I am going on the table trying to make my life better! Well, wish me luck, I talked to my doctor's office today and told them that I don't want the band, that I am going with the RNY - They are sending the paperwork into my insurance company by Thursday, as soon as we know something, then they will schedule me for my nutrition class and educational class, (held together) then my pre- op and blood work (also held together) - I don't know how soon it will be, but I really can't wait. I am very excited about this. I need to do this for me!
