Default New- non-op questions

Hello,

I have not had surgery yet but have been thinking about it. I use food for many reasons but usually to calm and comfort me. I've lost alot of weight in the past from diets but still I always end up turning back to food. I'm tired of trying to fight this battle. My question is, will surgery help me? I consider myself a compulsive overeater and I'm beginning to think there is no hope. I don't even know if I would qualify. I'm 5'6" and 218. I just feel like I'm in a battle that I can't win. Any other compulsive/binge eaters out there that have had a gastric bypass? How has it changed you?

Thanks

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

hello and welcome! im not sure what your BMI is, i dont have a chart in front of me, i know most insurance go by a BMI of 35 with comorbitities and BMI of 40 without. I am also 5'6" but started at 339 pounds so my BMI was much greater than yours. I too, like alot of the ppl here was a binge eater, i used food for every emotion i think, noone can say that this surgery is the right thing for you, you have to be the one to decide that, do lots of research, this site is a great place for information, also going thru the psych eval can help to identify things you may need to do for this surgery to be successful may you decide to do it. For myself, this was the best thing i have ever done and so far has been very successfull for me, i have lost 100 pounds so far and had surgery in august. Best wishes!

Welcome to the board, thank you for joining us.
((((((HUGS))))) May your journey go well.

qt's post says just about all.
I just calculated your BMI which is just over 35. Do you have any comorbidities? If not, it's likely you won't be covered. Now, when they say comorbs, most people think of high blood pressure, diabetes and the likes, but there is something that a lot of people don't realize they have, but is a comorb that insurance will approve. That is sleep apnea. Has anyone in your family ever complained of your snoring loudly? Do you feel as if you haven't been able to sleep well a lot of times? Do you feel sleepy during the day? These are some of the symptoms of sleep apnea, so it may be worth the try to have a sleep study done.

I suggest you go to your primary physician, and talk this over with him/her as that is the person who will probably be able to give you the best pointers, and help you get help, whatever you decide.

You won't be denied surgery because you are a binge eater, but you probably will be required to follow through with that post op.
You will need to deal with the issues that lead you to binge eat, as it will not go away with surgery, the only thing that will go away is the weight. The surgery is for you, probably, the best bet in keeping the weight off once you get it off, but here again, why you binge has to be looked into, and dealt with, so you can get the best out of surgery.
