Default Hello, Everyone!

My name is Shunda Renee and I am form Dallas, Texas (Better Luck Next Year, Mavs!) I am 5'3" and weighing at 390 lbs. I have tried to lose weight with LA Weight Loss, Apple Cider Vinegar, Xenodyne, Metabolife, Metabolift, Dexatrim, (you do get the point, I trust?). I have looked into WLS, went to the seminar in Dallas, and decided on RNYGB as the best course of action for me to take at this point. The problem is I don't think that my health insurance will ocver it. It costs $35,000.00! (yikes!) I was wondering of you good people know where I can find financing. I could save up for it, but I only make $15,000.00 annually, so that would be out of the question, I assume. Did anyone have trouble financing? Did anyone succeed in such? Was it difficult? What is the process? How long did it take? Also, I wouls like to know what kind of diet would be feasable (sp?) for the surgery, because I have talked to doctors here and they told me that it would reduce the risks greatly if I was to lose some weight before I had the surgery, but never did they tell me what kind of diet. Any and all comments are more than welcomed here and I would like to thank each and every one of you for your replies. To all who are on the "losing" side...CONGRATS! God Bless You All in the name of Jesus Christ!

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Welcome, Shunda! You will love it here. I'm still pre-op and waiting on insurance approval, which I'm hoping will be soon since it's a covered benefit. Sorry, I can't give you any tips, but I'm sure there are others on this board who can. They are a very smart bunch, alot of who had to fight with their insurance to get it covered.

Hi Shunda!
Welcome to the board. Hopefully the e-book link friendly sent you will help. Have you called any Docs to tell them of your problem? Sometimes they can help figure out ways to help you if your insurance refuses, like other ways to ask. I wish you luck. If you really really want it, go for it.
Your idea about loosing weight first, I think, is smart. My doc didn'y require it but in hind site, from all the posts I've read, it probably would have made things better for post op as well as the op itself.
Good luck and hang in there. You deserve the best.

Shunda, welcome to the board! Thank you for joinig us, please make yourself at home, and I hope you'll find many friends here.
With your pre-op diet, is your PCP cooperative about your having bypass? If so, why don't you ask his/her help in working on an medically supervised diet to help you with your pre-op wieght loss. Just a thought here.
I hope you can solve your finance problem, maybe, as everyone says, if you look into the Weight Loss Insurance Book, maybe you'll find some way that you can work this out.
Good luck, and

SHUNDA, MY surgeon did require me to loose 10 percent of my weight
pre op and I am so thankful he had me do it. ONE it ridded alot of my cravings pre op verses when i was first home from the hospitol. HE feels
the weight loss makes surgery safer, reduceing the fatty liver size for a
successful lap surgery and MY surgeon also feels it reduces the complications post op. I feel if he didnt put this on me to loose pre op
I would have easily gained upto 20 lbs more during the approval and clearance process. I would have been in that last meal syndrome figureing
I wouldnt have my favorite foods again!
SO i believe in pre op weight loss. FOR me i did ATKINS! and dropped the 25 lbs. ITS a very similar way of eating to the rules for us post op!
All the best
lisa

Hey, Lisa....I was laying in bed last night thinking that post-op eating is sort of like the Atkins diet. Which probably most of us have tried. I went to a seminar on diabetes recently. The speaker said that since the Atkins diet became so popular, it is much easier to educate about diabetes. Don't think I'll eat huge steaks and lots of bacon post-op, though, like I did before

Wannabethin...
YEP you nailed it perfectly!
A person who has done a perfect ATKINS will know that
our way of eating post op is atkins like. PROBABLY why
i am still on the message board from when i did atkins.
I used the rules of induction thru my weight loss keeping
my carbs under 25 and my protein up and up! KEPT me in
fat burning mode!
(and u know what, my hair thinned then too just like its doing now so its not the surgery its the eating)
