Sleeve Gastrectomy
Default Hello, I am new on this site...

My name is Jennifer or jenlynn. I had my surgery on december 5th, 2007. I ahd a sleeve gastrectomy done laproscopically. I had already had my gallbladder out previously so that was a moot point.

My startinng weight was 267 lbs. and I have lost 37 pounds to date. I am able to eat "real" food now and am taking it slow adding new foods to my diet.

I have not experienced a lot of hair loss to date, but I have heard that can change. I am really excited to meet others who have undergone this transformation in their lives as well.

I must admit I carry my doctors cards with me everywhere and when people ask me, I give them a card! Hey, if they ask, they may want to know more so why not? I have not offended anyone yet.

I also have lupus and that gives me a few challenges that I have to deal with like medicines (steroids) that can cause weight gain again. I was not overweight until I began my steroid therapy. I gained most of my weight during these treatments. There is no guarantee that surgery will keep the weight off due to the steroids I have to take from time to time so it is anybody's guess if that happens.

I am a married grandmother of nine. Eight girls and one boy. I have three children, a girl and two boys. Ironically, my daughter has the only grandson. I married the love of my life and am still quite happily married.

I am anxious to see how other spouses took the surgery and its results. My husband is overweight too, with diabetes, sleep apnea, HBP, etc. and he feels a little threatened by my choice. H seems to think that I am going to leave him. I told him that I loved him when we were both thin, and that is not going to change now. I reassure him all the time. Any ideas to help me out on this one?

Nice to meet you all! Hope we become good friends!

Jen

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Welcome to the board, thank you for joining us.
Congratulations on joining the Loser's Bench.
With your husband, I would say the best strategy is to always keep him in the loop, share everything with him, be straightforward and honest. As you go along your journey, you may hit rough patches, but as his insecurity decreased, things should settle down. He may choose to do the surgery himself, for the matter, in which case, you will be his best supporter.

(((((((HUGS)))))) May your journey go well.

Hi, Jen ~ glad you joined us! Sounds like you have some challenges but we have lots of folks in and out here with lots of experience, lots of support for sure! I think the hubby thing is not uncommon at all, I know my relationship with DH has changed for sure, although for us it seems to be a good thing - never dull for sure - LOL.

Welcome to the board!!! You are doing great and it sounds like you are up to the challenge with the meds. I think you may inspire you husband to want to be healthier too and as you make the food changes he will be eating better as well. My hubby is having the lapband on the 28th so we will be competing to see who can get to goal the fastest. I look forward to getting to know you!

Welcome! Congrats on your success thus far.

My husband is also overweight and suffers from high cholesterol and sleep apnea, but he wasn't as bad as I was. After surgery, the worst thing he has gone thru is watching when I have my bad days. He says its hard for him when he feel like he can't make me feel better or help in some way. He has used my surgery and consequential weight loss as motivation to eat better and exercise more. Now we are eating alot of the same foods and he eats alot of salad. He has lost 10 pounds in the last month and teases me that he will catch me if he can!

The best piece of wisdom I can share with you is this..I have heard over and over again that this surgery makes good marraiges stronger, and struggling marraiges end. It seems like you have a good, solid relationship with the hubby. I anticipate you two will be just fine. He just needs to adjust to all this change like you do. Change is never easy, whether its a good or bad change.

Good luck on your journey!

My husband was kinda against the surgery becasue he was sooo scared that something might happen to me and could lose me. Now my husband is just as thrilled as I am about losing weight. He always has to measure me with his arms around me(when he hugs me). He tells me that he can get his arms around me and then some right now. My husband is eating alot of the foods I am. He feels healthier eating like I do. He eats noodles and potatoes once in a while but not as often as before. But my husband likes his sweets. He changed to my sugar free candies. I guess I have a swet tooth now and that is where my sugar free candies come in. So now I call my candy stash our candy stash. I do not eat them everyday only when I crave something really sweet and the sugar free candies do the trick. So when I crave sweet stuff like that I will not deprive myself becasue I am afraid I might binge if I do not satify my craving. Now my husband is eating much more healthier now.
