Default New to this web site with a post-op question?

I have recently started my own weight loss journey and I have a post-operative question related to cavity drainage from laproscopic Gastric Bypass. The doctors sent me home after 3 days in the hospital with my drain still in place. The doctors insist that the volume of drainage will decrease in time. I am not seeing any decrease. Do I have something to be worried about? My worst fear is to have to go back in the OR to go through the process again. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Mark-from-Mass

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Congrats !!!!! I wish I could answer your question, but there are several veterans here that will help you. This is a good question and one I'm putting in my memory bank for when I have my surgery on the 3rd of March. Good luck!!!!!!!

I Had 2 Different Drains For 2 Different Reason Since I Had Some Complications And Mine Was Flowing For A While When I Went Home. I Think Its Fine The Worst That Can Happen Is The Doc Just Says At Your Next Visit He Doesnt Want To Take The Drain Out Like What Happened To Me. Somtimes It Takes A While For You To Drain Out.

Doc Will Probably Be On Soon To Explain Everything. But Dont Worry The Same Happened To Me.

Infact NOW That I Remember When I Had Spoke To The Doc Office They Made Me Empty It Out Myself While I Was At Home Because It Wont Be Able To Drain More Out Of Your Body If It Fills Up To Much. I Had One The Round One That Was Right At My Tummy And An Other Run That Look Like An Iv Bag And That Went From An Other Area In My Tummy And THE Line Went Down My Leg And The Bag Was Strapped At The Bottom Of My Leg. I Had To Empty That One As Well

Welcome to the board, thank you for joining us.
Congratulations on joining the Loser's Bench.
((((((((HUGS)))))))) May your journey go well.

Do you have just the drain in place and you're told to change your dressing at the appropriate time? Or, do you have a bag attached to it that you need to drain out yourself periodically?
In any case, you are less than one week out, so you still will have some drainage, it can take 2-4 weeks before the surgeon takes out the tube, some people have it in as long as 6 weeks. In any case, the tube will be taken out even if you have some drainage, as there's no need to keep it in until there's nada, and after an extended period of time, the drain tube itself will become an irritation and source of drainage.
You're doing perfectly well,

Welcome and congratulations on your surgery!!!!! I had one drain (the little round bulb Jackson Pratt drain) and it was removed the day I went home (2 days after surgery). It still had drainage that morning, but nothing excessive. I wouldn't worry too much. Like with every other aspect of these surgeries, ALL docs are different!!!!!

Thank you everyone for your helpful replies to my question. I can rest a little easier now. I do have the Jackson-Pratt drain and I have to empty it out 3 times per day. I was concerned that something was wrong because it doesn't seem to be lessening, as far as volume goes. There is no foul odor and there does not seem to be any infection. I guess i just need to be a little more patient.
